The president of the Spanish public company Tragsa, Jesús Casas, the Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo and representatives of the Public Works area of the Island Council have participated in a meeting to address new technical actions related to the presence of CO₂ from the volcanic eruption in the area of Puerto Naos and La Bombilla. The meeting allowed to analyze the planning of a system for channeling and evacuating gas extracted from the subsoil, as well as the next phases planned for its development.

La Palma has consolidated its leadership on sustainability by hosting the 27th edition of the Meeting of the Spanish Committee of the UNESCO MaB (Man and the Biosphere) Programme. During this high-level meeting, institutional and scientific representatives from all over Spain met on the Canary Island to evaluate their plan of action for the coming years, ratifying the National Strategic Action Plan 2026-2035. The event, which featured the presentation of the Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, valued the fact of holding this meeting on an island that perfectly combines development and protection of the environment, especially in a fragile environment such as the one devastated by the volcanic eruption.

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, has participated as a guest in the meeting of the General Council of Notaries, in the Parador de La Palma, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the eruption of Tajogaite. The meeting served to recognize the role played by notaries during the volcanic emergency and their subsequent contribution to the recovery process of the Island. From the first days of the eruption, volunteer notaries went to La Palma to provide assistance to the people affected and provide the necessary advice in an exceptional situation that, in addition to personal and material losses, generated numerous complex legal and patrimonial situations. His intervention helped to ensure the legal security of the affected families at one of the most uncertain times of the emergency.

The Council of Ministers today approved the application of the Contingency Fund in the amount of 32,064,728.57 euros to grant additional subsidies to the City of El Paso, the City of Tazacorte and the Island Council of La Palma, aimed at the repair and reconstruction of infrastructure, equipment and public facilities damaged by the volcanic eruption, according to the provisions of Royal Decree-Law 20/2021. With this new sum today, other activations already made of the contingency fund and the public infrastructure agreements affected signed in 2022, the State will have contributed a total of 85.64 million euros, compared to the 50% that corresponds to it, as agreed for the financing of these agreements.

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, accompanied the Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, to the institutional visit made to the facilities that the company DISA Renewables has on the island of Tenerife, neighbor of La Palma, dedicated to the research of high enthalpy geothermal. This ecological model that offers a clean energy flow 24/7 is being implemented in the municipality of Vilaflor in Tenerife and it is planned to move later to La Palma, to continue the exploratory work there. Both projects are funded by the state agency Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE).

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, attended the presentation of the new gantry crane located in the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma, which will contribute to the better growth of the island economy, since it will allow to increase container loading and unloading operations and increase the size of ships when maritime traffic so requires. The maritime activity in container loading reaches, as confirmed by the company itself, similar levels prior to the 2021 volcano. This is an indicator of the growth of the island economy taking into account that banana exports - one of the main exported loads - are not in the pre-eruptive values since, of the farms buried by the lava, about 30% of them are currently in operation.

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, and the deputy director of the Office, José Manuel Monge, visited the Monterrey Hotel in El Paso, accompanied by the mayor, Eloy Martín, and other members of the government group, as well as those responsible for the execution of the work of Dragados. The action already reaches approximately 90% of execution and is one of the most important projects of patrimonial, tourist and formative recovery promoted in the Island during the reconstruction process. The work has been approached by approximately 60 professionals of different profiles, symbol of the size of the project that reflects the difficulty and effort involved in building an island where, at the same time, reconstruction is being carried out on multiple fronts.

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, has participated in the LPQI Workshop 2026, which brings together researchers and specialists around the La Palma Quantum Interferometer (LPQI) project, where it has defended the strategic role of science, technology and knowledge as fundamental elements to advance reconstruction and build new future opportunities for the island.

The approval of the Royal Decree-Law on urgent fiscal and financial measures represents a new support from the Government of Spain to La Palma and, especially, to the people and sectors that are still facing the consequences of the Tajogaite eruption. Five years after the eruption, difficulties persist that make it necessary to maintain public support and provide new tools to advance the economic and social recovery of the island.

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, has highlighted the potential of scientific knowledge to move towards a more resilient island, safe and with new opportunities for economic development in the framework of a meeting with the delegate of the Superior Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) in the Canary Islands, Manuel Nogales Hidalgo, at the headquarters of the Insular Directorate of the General Administration of the State in La Palma. The meeting was also attended by the island director of the AGE, Carlos García, with the aim of getting to know in depth the scientific capabilities and research infrastructures that the main public research agency in Spain develops in the archipelago and to explore ways of collaboration that contribute to the reconstruction and future of La Palma.
