The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, has transferred to the new director of the National Geographic Institute (IGN), Laura Barbas, the strategic relevance of the ‘CO₂ Alert’ project, not only for La Palma, but as a tool to guarantee security and surveillance in volcanic eruptions. This initiative is being financed by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility - on which the IGN depends - with a budget of 4.3 million euros. It has the collaboration of the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN), the Cabildo de La Palma and the Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences (CSIC - Ministry of Science).

The prestigious British channel BBC has interviewed the Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma within the framework of the program Canaries: The Travel Show, a space dedicated to show the world the attractions, the reality and the evolution of international destinations. During the conversation, the Commissioner highlighted the progress made after the volcanic eruption, the institutional commitment to the recovery of the island and the resilience of the palm tree society. The interview highlighted not only the process of urban and social reconstruction, but also the opportunity to transform La Palma into a benchmark for sustainability and future planning.

The Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, has met with representatives of the Association of Packaging, Exporting and Marketing Entities of Fruits of La Palma (Asepalma) and the Palm Association of Farmers and Ranchers (ASPA) to analyze the state of the reconstruction of the agricultural sector, assess the impact of the investments made by the State and take note of the needs that the sector raises.

The Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma participates in the IFEMA fair, Madrid Fusión 2026, through the brand 'Saborea La Palma', in a strategic commitment to gastronomy as a key axis for the social and economic recovery of the island and as a tool for promoting local product, gastronomic talent and territory.

The list of grants managed by the Presidential Council of the Canary Islands Government during the fourth quarter of 2025 is published, in accordance with the Transparency Law. Of the 119 million total listings, they are included directly related to the Volcano: 92,834,000 € agricultural individuals, 9,083,000 € agricultural companies, 3,173,000 € communities of agricultural goods and 822,000 € Sociedad Velia.

Scientists from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and the Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences (IETCC), in collaboration with the Island Council and Firefighters of La Palma, have carried out an innovative experiment to depressurize the land in Puerto Naos and La Bombilla. The project is progressing with the installation of a pipe that will remove the gases accumulated in the subsoil of one of the garages of the so-called ‘black zone’, the one that suffers the most from the high concentrations of CO₂.

On the occasion of the presentation of the new Cultural Guide “Art of Flanders on the Island of La Palma”, the Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of the island, Héctor Izquierdo Triana, attended the event and highlighted the role of art as an instrument of recovery of the social fabric and of the palm identity after the volcanic eruption.

Since the creation of the Commissioner, in June 2022, the support of all the ministries towards La Palma has been evident in all its areas. Izquierdo has stressed that the investments of the State are not limited to the material: “The support of the Ministry of Culture and other administrations allows us to implement fundamental cultural initiatives, which give voice to our history, preserve our roots and strengthen our island identity.”

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo Triana, attended the tribute ceremony held in La Palma to the founder of the IAC, Francisco Sánchez, a recognition that reaffirms the administration’s commitment to promoting science, innovation and the sustainable development of the island.

The edition of the newspaper 'El País' of today, December 24, 2025, includes among its pages an in-depth interview with the Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma in which he addresses the situation of the recovery process of the island four years after the Tajogaite eruption. The informative piece is titled: “The goal is for 6% of La Palma’s GDP to come from science.” Four years after the eruption ended, the person responsible for recovering the island’s activity takes stock of the work and admits: “Volcanoes are part of our idiosyncrasy, it’s a love-hate relationship”

The Czech Republic's Ambassador to Spain, Libor Sečka, visited the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory with the Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, as part of the institutional promotion of the European Solar Telescope (EST), a project that will be funded by the Czech Republic and in which that country plays a key role.
