Renewal plan for the C-5 line of Cerca Madrid
- It will serve Stadler’s new high-capacity trains that will be added during 2026 and require an adaptation of the line’s infrastructure.
- It will allow the expansion of parking and maintenance capacity, as well as improving intervention times on trains and the availability of equipment.
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has litigated, through Renfe, the construction of a maintenance base in Módiga-El Soto for trains on the C-5 line of Cerca Madrid, one of the most used of this railway network. The tender has a budget of 42.7 million euros and an execution time of 18 months. This action is encompassed within the plan for the renewal and total modernisation of line C-5.
The new base will have a fundamental role in the operation of the C-5 line of Cerca Madrid, since it will serve the new Stadler trains of great capacity that will be progressively incorporated throughout this year and that require infrastructures adapted to their technical characteristics.
In the same way, it will allow the expansion of parking and maintenance capacity, as well as improving intervention times on trains and the availability of material.
The base will have three internal maintenance tracks of 200 metres in length and an annex building for offices and ancillary services. On the outside, it will have three tracks with technical platforms, in addition to a washing track and another one equipped with a lathe.
This action is part of the Integral Plan of Workshops and Maintenance 2025-2030, with which Renfe is renovating its industrial facilities throughout Spain to adapt them to the new needs of railway service, with an investment of more than 1,000 million euros. The program includes the construction of new workshops and the modernization of existing ones, with the aim of adapting the maintenance system before the integral renovation of the train fleet destined for Public Services (OSP).
In parallel, the company is implementing a new technology-based maintenance model. Real-time monitoring systems, automatic track inspections and digital tools make it possible to anticipate incidents, optimize processes and reduce passing times per workshop.
Transformation of the C-5 line
The C-5 of the Cerca de Madrid centre is currently one of the most used railway lines in all of Spain. With a demand that reaches 72 million travelers a year, the line concentrates almost four out of ten accesses of Proxies - Madrid.
The Ministry is carrying out the transformation of the C-5 with an action plan endowed with 1.35 billion euros. This roadmap includes 28 projects that will increase the capacity of the line by 60%, as well as improve the accessibility of stations and trains, and its operational adaptability.
The funding is divided into two large blocks: a $650 million line managed by Adif for infrastructure and a $700 million line managed by Renfe.
During the year 2026, the first units of the new trains manufactured by Stadler (series 453) will begin to arrive in Madrid, which stand out for their high reliability, a capacity greater than 500 passengers, total accessibility and improved spaces for bicycles.
