The Minimum Vital Income reaches about 210,000 vulnerable people in the Community of Madrid in March
Inclusion
The Minimum Vital Income (IMV) has reached in the month of March to 67,953 households in the Community of Madrid, in which 209,454 people, according to the latest statistics published today by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS).
Notable among the data is that of households in which minors live who have received aid, since there has been an increase of more than 4% in the region compared to February, reaching 46,256 since the 44,837 of the previous month.
The average age of beneficiaries in the Community is slightly over 46 years. Regarding the number of minors protected, it amounts to 87,749, about 42% of the total.
Data at the national level
In the country as a whole, the Minimum Vital Income (IMV) payroll reached 829,399 households in March, in which 2,532,284 people live. Of the total, more than one million are children and adolescents, in particular, 1,034,319.
The average amount of the benefit is 543.1 euros per month per household and, overall, this month’s payroll has amounted to 495.6 million euros.
In March of this year 2026, there were 125,920 active benefits more than a year ago, with the number of protected households having increased by almost 18%. This percentage is similar to the increase in the number of beneficiaries, which has added 18.1% (387,278) since March 2025.
Both by the profile of the holders and the beneficiaries, we can say that the IMV has a strong female profile. In March, 68% of the headlines (563,741) and 53.4% of the beneficiaries (1,352,883) are women.
Since its launch in 2020, the IMV has protected more than 3.5 million people (3,546,408).
Enhanced protection for children
The IMV is particularly an essential tool in the fight against child poverty, since it increases the amount of the benefit depending on the number of children in the cohabitation unit. Currently, 41% of the beneficiaries are minors, which means 1,034,319 girls, boys and adolescents protected by this benefit.
In the third month of the year, more than two-thirds of the families covered by the IMV (570,548 households, 69% of the total) live with minors. Of these, 139,499 are single-parent households.
“The Minimum Vital Income makes the difference especially in childhood. Today, 41% of the beneficiaries are minors and in almost seven out of ten sheltered homes there are boys and girls. This means that we are acting where it matters most, which is in the present and in the future of the country,” said Minister Elma Saiz.
The Child Support Supplement strengthens IMV coverage with additional support for each dependent child. In March, 573,831 households received it, with an average aid of 66.4 euros per child and 120.7 euros per household with children. This benefit establishes different amounts according to age: 115 euros per month for children under 0 to 3 years; 80.5 euros between 3 and 6 years; and 57.5 euros between 6 and 18 years.
This supplement can be perceived independently of the IMV, since it has broader income thresholds. Así, además de proteger a familias en situación de pobreza severa, alcanza a hogares con rentas bajas o moderadas. For example, it can be requested by a family of two adults and two minors with incomes of up to 4,182 euros per month, which significantly expands the scope of the child poverty protection network.
“IMV is not just a benefit, it is a network that prevents exclusion, that gives stability to families and that allows thousands of people to build a life project with more security. The Child Aid Supplement reinforces precisely that, because we know that investing in children is investing in equal opportunities,” says the head of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.
The Minimum Vital Income and young people
The average age of the beneficiaries of the IMV is 28.5 years, which is an important support for young people in situations of exclusion. With the exception of IMV holders, the age drops to 20.1 years.
Precisely, the improvements incorporated into the IMV facilitate access to the benefit for young people in vulnerable situations. For example, people over the age of 18 or emancipated minors with dependent sons or daughters may apply for help. And the period of independent living for young people under 30 years of age has been reduced from 3 to 2 years.
“IMV is also being a real lever for many young people who are in a vulnerable situation. The average age of the beneficiaries is barely 28 years, and if we look beyond the benefit holders, it drops even to 20. This tells us that we are reaching those who are starting their adult life without sufficient resources. The IMV gives them something as fundamental as a point of support so as not to be left behind. It’s more than financial aid, we talk about opportunities and preventing a generation from getting caught up in exclusion,” says Saiz.
General requirements for applying for the IMV
The IMV is a Social Security benefit that guarantees a minimum level of income to households in vulnerable situations and that was launched more than five years ago. It is configured as a subjective right, adapted to the reality of each unit of coexistence, and constitutes a key instrument in the fight against poverty and social exclusion.
To apply for the IMV, it is necessary to have resided in Spain legally, effectively and continuously for at least the previous year. Residence is demonstrated by the registration in the central register of foreigners in the case of Community and Swiss citizens, or with the corresponding authorization in the case of persons from third countries. The domicile in Spain is verified with certificate of registration and the unit of coexistence is demonstrated by means of the family book, civil registration certificates or padronal data.
In addition, both the applicant and the rest of the members of their household must be in a situation of economic vulnerability, as they do not have sufficient income or assets.
The IMV is compatible with work income and includes incentives to promote job placement and improve the living conditions of families.
In addition, the new system of double income review implemented allows families to know in advance the update of their benefit. As a result, from the month of May the beneficiaries already know whether, depending on the income of the previous year, their benefit will be increased, reduced or extinguished.
