Groizard highlighted the renewable energy potential of the Canary Islands on his visit to Vilaflor, where the first 3,000-metre geothermal survey is carried out in Spain. This project, funded with 14.5 million euros, is within the scope of Support for innovative project feasibility studies for deep geothermal energy use, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with funds from the European Union - NextGenerationEU. The goal is to identify temperatures exceeding 100ºC and pressure fractures suggesting the presence of a hydrothermal bag. The Canary Islands, whose energy source is mainly based on fossil fuels, find in geothermal energy an opportunity to meet part of its energy demand and progress in decarbonization. The IDAE’s VIAGEO programme allocates more than 100 million euros to support nine projects in the Canary Islands, with the aim of promoting the use of this renewable and sustainable energy.
Inauguration of facilities of Boluda Coporación Marítima in La Palma

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, accompanied the Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, to the institutional visit made to the facilities that the company DISA Renewables has on the island of Tenerife, neighbor of La Palma, dedicated to the research of high enthalpy geothermal. This ecological model that offers a clean energy flow 24/7 is being implemented in the municipality of Vilaflor in Tenerife and it is planned to move later to La Palma, to continue the exploratory work there. Both projects are funded by the state agency Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE).
