The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, stressed today that the government of Pedro Sánchez “continues to work decisively for the Galicians and Galicians, activating measures that reach every home and that place people at the center of political action.” During an appearance at the headquarters of the Social Security of Santiago de Compostela, Pedro Blanco valued the maintenance of the great social shield of the Government of Spain, designed to protect people, reinforce the Welfare State and improve the lives of Galicians and Galicians. “Faced with the noise and the discourses of permanent pessimism,” he added, “this Government works with policies for the working class and for all citizens without exception, betting on useful, concrete and transformative measures.”
Thus, he claimed that in a complex international context, marked by economic uncertainty and the advance of reactionary discourses, “Spain chose the right path with more social protection and more public investment as a guarantee, social justice and progress.”
In this regard, the delegate highlighted the revaluation of pensions under the CPI as one of the clearest examples of the Government’s commitment to strengthening the Welfare State and social protection. This new pension policy allowed the average retirement pension in Galicia to reach 1,300 euros per month, almost 400 euros more than in 2018. In addition, he recalled that in 2026 pensions will rise by 2.7%, while minimum and non-contributory pensions will rise above 7% and up to 11.4%, guaranteeing the purchasing power of about 700,000 Galician pensioners, who receive around 800,000 pensions. “Defending pensions is defending a dignified life,” he said.
Pedro Blanco also highlighted the impact of labor policies. In Galicia, 128,000 people receive the Minimum Interprofessional Salary, which was increased by 61% in seven years, reducing inequalities and wage gap, with a special impact on women, who represent 60% of the beneficiaries.
In addition, Galicia closed 2025 with about 1.1 million people employed, 91,000 more than in 2018 and with record figures of indefinite hiring, with 201,000 contracts in 2025, 332% more than in 2019.
He also recalled the advances in improving the conditions of public employees with salary increases approved by 2.5% in 2025 and up to 2% this year that benefit thousands of workers in Galicia and are part of a stable agreement until 2028.
In the field of social protection, the delegate stressed that the Minimum Vital Income already reaches 95,700 Galician households, with an increase of 11.4%, and that the electric social bond protects nearly 98,000 vulnerable families. Added to this are measures such as the prohibition of cuts in basic supplies and the suspension of evictions without a housing alternative, extended until the end of 2026.
In education, more than 56,000 Galician students receive state study grants, which means that one in five students can study thanks to government support. Since 2018, the education budget has increased by 104%, from 3,300 to 6,730 million euros in 2025.
In addition, she highlighted the extension of rights such as maternity and paternity leave, the contribution of training practices or aid for free medicines and glasses for children under 16 years of age.
Pedro Blanco also recalled the improvements for public employment such as the anticipation of retirement for forest firefighters and environmental agents, or the compatibility between pension and professional practice for primary care doctors and pediatricians.
The delegate stressed that behind each figure there are people, families and real stories and that the Government’s policies translate into the daily life of the citizens “in being able to arrive at the end of the month, pay for light, study or have a decent pension”.
He stressed that this set of measures shows a Government that protects and strengthens the Welfare State, without triumphalism and with the awareness that there are still important challenges to face, especially in the field of housing and the fight against inequalities.
Finally, he reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to continue working tirelessly to strengthen the social shield in Galicia, expanding rights and ensuring that public policies reach every home. “Faced with the policies of cuts and privatization proposals, the government will continue to demonstrate that there is another way to govern, with social sensitivity, economic responsibility and a vision for the future.” “Our roadmap for 2026 is to consolidate the progress achieved, promote new measures and reinforce existing ones to reach the most homes and protect who needs it most,” he insisted, while urging the Xunta de Galicia also to assume its responsibilities, join efforts and take advantage of the economic and social impulse of the Government so that Galicia advances at the same pace as the country as a whole.
