The subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos, highlighted the support of the Government to Ourense families with aid for the acquisition of textbooks and didactic material "so that education reaches everyone equally". He did so during a visit to the Eixo bookstore in Ourense, where he reported on public education support programs.
The subdelegate explained that the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports allocates 58.5 million euros to finance textbooks and didactic material, of which 2.4 are for Galicia. The territorial distribution of the funds of the Territorial Aid Cooperation Program was approved by the Council of Ministers on March 10. These funds will allow the Ministry of Education to fund grants for students from Primary, ESO, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training in centers supported by public funds.
In this regard, Eladio Santos explained that in this program the Ministry of Education contributed 13.5 million euros to the Xunta in the last five years, to which is now added that distribution for school materials. "It represents a reinforcement in the equity of the educational system, ensuring that no unfavorable economic situation limits the access of students to the basic resources for their learning," he said.
In this regard, the subdelegate stressed the Government ' s commitment to equal opportunities. "At a time when prices are rising, the Government of Spain stands by families and shields something as fundamental as being able to have a textbook so that all boys and girls can finish their studies," he said.
Defence of the education system
In addition, Eladio Santos influenced the Government’s support to the Galician public education system in recent years, since the Government transferred 308 million euros to the Xunta to reinforce non-university education, of which 200 million were allocated to Primary, ESO and Baccalaureate and 108 million to Vocational Training, allowing more than 42,000 new places to be created in training cycles.
The subdelegate also referred to the new Royal Decree of scholarships approved by the Council of Ministers for the academic year 2026-2027, which establishes a historical investment of 2,559 million euros, the ninth consecutive increase since 2018. This reinforcement of scholarships will also have a significant impact in Galicia, where 54,000 families currently receive aid from the Ministry, with an economic injection of 132 million euros, 59% more than nine years ago.
