The Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has today approved a Royal Decree-Law to promote the fourth edition of the Young Summer With an investment of close to 130 million euros. This program will again provide discounts to young people between the ages of 18 and 30 of up to 90 percent for bus and train trips made in the summer period of 2026.
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility will allocate 130 million euros to this program this year to cover the bonuses of the single and return tickets to travel through Spain and also the interrail through Europe.
In this way, the Ministerial Department launches for the fourth consecutive year the Youth Summer, which has shown a great reception among the youth of the country and has been a great success in its previous editions of 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Young Summer 2026
In the 2026 edition of the Young Summer, all young people with Spanish or foreign nationality and legal residence in Spain, born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2008, can benefit from the discounts. They will be able to access bus and train tickets with discounts with date of travel between 1 July and 30 September 2026.
The discounts contemplated in the Young Summer program are the following:
- Discount of 90% for regular bus services of state competition.
- 90% discount on conventional half distance and metric width network services.
- 50% discount on simple Avant titles.
- Discount of 50%, with a maximum of 30 euros per ticket, for long-distance or high-speed commercial services of all railway operators.
- Discount of 50% of the Global Flexible of Interrail of 10 days in 2 months, when it is marketed through Renfe. The discount applies to Interrail’s official rates, with their price characteristics according to age, etc.
To qualify for the discounts it will be necessary to register on the Junior Summer website that will enable this possibility in the coming days and that will be available on the website. ministry website. Potential beneficiaries will have to register with their ID or NIE and, if the program requirements are met, the beneficiaries will receive a personal and non-transferable code that they must use to purchase the train and bus tickets and the Interrail pass reduced on the different websites of the respective operators.
Goals of the Young Summer
The Young Summer was born in 2023 and has been consolidated as a successful program to get young people to reduce the use of the private vehicle, with the consequent reduction of emissions and accidents. In addition, this program helps to bring collective public land transport closer to young people, in order to build loyalty among new passengers.
Through the Young Summer it is also succeeding in promoting their personal development, by allowing them to know new places and cultures; as well as strengthening their social relationships. In addition, it is an initiative that allows to enhance the tourist and cultural sector.
The program has shown its great reception among the youth of the country. In the 2025 edition, it achieved record travel at the end with about 6.8 million trips (6,873,417), 30% more than in the 2024 edition, made by train and bus between July 1 and September 30, 2025. The initiative also recorded a record number of users last year: in total, 1,553,358 young people between the ages of 18 and 30, which represented 10% more travelers than in the previous year.
In 2024, there were nearly 1.4 million travelers (1,393,309) who made more than five million trips (5,187,557); and in the first edition of 2023, about 1.13 million young people (1,131,445) made almost 4 million trips (3,998,816).
Thus, the Young Summer program, in its three previous editions, has facilitated that more than four million young people (4,078,142) have made more than 16 million trips (16,059,790) during the summer period.
With a new edition of the program, the Ministry remains committed to measures that promote the use of collective public land transport by young people, both rail and road, in their travels, both in Spain and in Europe. It is also a beneficial measure for the tourist sector, cultural and for the development of rural Spain. In addition, collective public transport is fairer in social terms, more inclusive, and is a key piece in achieving climate goals.
In this edition of 2026, the program will join the other measures taken recently by the Government and the Ministry of Transport to deal with the increase in prices due to the crisis in the Middle East. In particular, this increase has affected passenger transport, which especially affects young people, a group with significant economic vulnerability.
Important savings thanks to the Young Summer
And the Young Summer program allows young people to enjoy significant savings on their summer trips. For example, according to data from last year, the average discount for each single bus ticket was about 24.5 euros. Thus, a group of six friends and friends between 19 and 20 years old who are planning to go to the beach by bus this month of July can save about 294 euros.
In the case of high-speed rail services, the average discount per one-way ticket reached 18 euros. In this sense, a 29-year-old couple who wants to know the cultural heritage of Spain, this summer will save an average of 72 euros on each round trip they make on a high-speed train.
In the case of medium-distance trains, the average discount is around 10 euros per single ticket. Thus, a group of four 24-year-olds will save about 80 euros on average by travelling (round trip) this summer on medium-distance trains thanks to the discounts of the Young Summer.
Finally, the average 10-day Interrail Global Flexible pass discount is around 168 euros, so two sisters aged 20 and 27 will save more than 300 euros on their 10-day Interrail trip through Europe thanks to the Young Summer discounts.
