The Department ' s Central Archive is the custodian of funds produced by several Ministries that have successively inherited the functions or competencies currently held by the Ministry of Territorial Policy, or that have been disappearing at the same time as the organs that generated them as their organizational structures evolved.

Thus, it collects documentation from the following producing organisms:

• Ministry of the Interior (1937-1978)
• Presidency of the Government Ministry of the Presidency (1952-1986)
• Ministry of Territorial Administration (1979-1986)
• Ministry for Public Administrations (1986-2004)
• Ministry of Public Administration (2004-2011)
• Ministry of Finance and Public Administration (2011-2018)
• Ministry of Territorial Policy and Public Service (2018 - 2021)
• Ministry of Territorial Policy (2021- to date)

Therefore, the Archive is a fundamental source for research on the execution of government policy in its relations with the Autonomous Communities and Local Corporations, the administrative organization, the legal and remunerative regime of public officials, the procedures and inspection of services of the State Administration, etc.
