- The pensions in Madrid amount to 1,291,358, most of them for retirement.
- Of the total pensions in Madrid, 35,209 are orphan’s pensions with an average of 584.72 euros and 25% are minimum supplement pensions.
- The average pension has risen in Madrid by 4.03%
The Social Security has paid 1,291,358 pensions, 12% of pensions nationwide, to 1,183,629 pensioners, with an average pension of 1,573.76, one of the highest in Spain, although it is far from the average pensions in the Basque Country that is already close to 1,900 euros or the average in Asturias that exceeds 1,800 euros.
This last payroll incorporates the revaluation of pensions approved by the Council of Ministers in December and which must now be validated in Congress by the parliamentary groups to continue to be applied.
In general, the expected and applied increase already in this payroll is 2.7%, according to the average CPI between December 2024 and November 2025, as contemplated in the Law on the Guarantee of the Purchasing Power of Pensions approved in 2021.
Among the pension payroll are those of permanent disability, retirement, widowhood, orphanhood and favor to relatives, some of which can be charged by a person in some cases.
Retirement pensions per se reach 880,359 people, as there are other social security coverage. These pensions are the highest, since their average is 1,787.37 euros, since the new additions expand the contribution base. Thus, the average permanent disability pension is 1,354 euros.
In the case of minimum pensions, the expected increase is 7% in 2026, a percentage that is higher for pensions with a dependent spouse and widow with family burdens, which increase by 11.4%, the same percentage that applies to non-contributory pensions.
In La Comunidad de Madrid the number of pensions with a minimum supplement stands at 176,669. Among all pensions, those with this minimum supplement represent 13.7% of the total pensions. The minimum supplement is a financial aid that is added to the contributory pension (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, etc.) when it does not reach the minimum amount fixed annually in the Budgets.
Data at the national level
This measure was applied in January to the more than 6.6 million retirement pensions and the 1.5 million widow’s pensions in the Social Security System, in addition to permanent disability pensions (1,049,580), orphanhood (318,163) and family benefits (46,352).
The revaluation is also foreseen for the 736,075 Passive Class pensions, of public officials of the State Passive Class System, whose payroll as a whole in December (last data available) amounted to 3,378.24 million euros.
The revaluation has benefited the 9.5 million pensioners of Social Security, and the more than 716,000 of the passive classes. The revaluation amounts to approximately 570 euros additional per year for people with an average retirement pension, while the average pensions in the system will increase by around 500 euros per year. In this way, the maintenance of their purchasing power is guaranteed.
