The delegate of the Government of Spain in the Community of Madrid, Francisco Martín, and the president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Tagus, Antonio Yáñez, held a meeting this afternoon at the headquarters of the Government Delegation in Madrid in the face of the warnings for rain, snowfall and intense wind planned for today and tomorrow in the demarcation of Tagus, with special incidence in the Community of Madrid.
During the meeting, the current meteorological and hydrological situation has been analyzed, as well as the expected evolution of the episode, and it has been agreed to maintain a permanent follow-up of the channels and the possible effects of precipitation and thawing. Both institutions have activated the coordination mechanisms and remain alert, attentive to the evolution of the warnings issued by the AEMET and to the bulletins of the Tajo Hydrographic Confederation.
The government delegate, Francisco Martín, stressed that this is “a moment to convey a message of prudence to the citizens”, insisting on the importance of “following information through official channels” and always attending to “the indications of the security and emergency services”.
For his part, the president of the Tajo Hydrographic Confederation explained that the management of these days focuses on “the security of dams and reservoirs”, noting that the avenues are being managed “by unpacking flows much lower than those of entry and maintaining seasonal safeguards”. This management, he added, is what allows “to give security to the populations and goods located downstream of the reservoirs”.
Antonio Yáñez also pointed out that, although a new meteorological episode begins, “we are not seeing as important contributions as those recorded in the months of March and April last year”
In particular, according to the bulletins issued today, February 2, by the Tajo Hydrographic Confederation, orange level warnings are maintained for exceeding hydrological thresholds in the Community of Madrid, which mainly affect the Alberche River, as it passes through Aldea del Fresno, and the Guadarrama River, in the surroundings of Collado Villalba. Although, on the other hand, all the unreservoirs in the Community of Madrid are currently at a normal level.. These warnings respond to the high flow rates recorded as a result of the precipitation and motivate a continuous monitoring of the evolution of the channels, with special attention to the potentially floodable areas.
In this regard, Francisco Martín pointed out that the meeting has allowed “to analyze the hydraulic situation in the entire basin, but especially in the Community of Madrid”, and he wanted to thank “the work of so many public employees who manage such an important asset as water”.
