- The Secretary of State, María González Veracruz, has guaranteed the continuity of the project after the success of the collaboration with the University, with more funding and together with the Xunta de Galicia, as all the communities with their own language have done
- González Veracruz held a meeting with Senén Barro, director of the CITIUS research center of the University, to assess the results of the works financed with 3.4 million euros by the Government of Spain and which have been key to the presence of the Galician in the development of the public and sovereign family of models of AI ALIA
- 95% of artificial intelligence in the world is trained in English, seriously harming other cultures and languages that are minority, such as Galician. This program makes possible the presence of the Galician in the training of artificial intelligence
The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz, has advanced to the University of Santiago de Compostela that the continuity of the project is guaranteed, also the financial support, to continue strengthening the use of the language and develop an AI in Galician. The University of Santiago, through its CITIUS research center and the Galician Language Institute, had already received 3.4 million euros financed exclusively by the Secretary of State to promote Galician in the digital age.
After the success of the collaboration, the Secretary of State said that there will be more funding for the Galician, as has already been shared with the Xunta de Galicia to contribute financially, in the same way that all the autonomous communities have done with their own language.
Veracruz explained that “we are showing that it is possible to develop successful models of artificial intelligence in official languages, such as Galician, revaluing them socially and economically, conserving our linguistic and cultural wealth and promoting an industry around language technologies.”
Successful results
González Veracruz held a working meeting with Senén Barro, director of CITIUS, the research center of the University of Compostela that develops cutting-edge language technologies and artificial intelligence models in the Galician language.
Among the results obtained after almost three years of work are the massive corpus in Galician and the creation of open and responsibly designed language models. These objectives are aligned with the commitment of the Government of Spain, through the development of the family of models of public and sovereign AI ALIA, to enhance language technologies for the languages of the State.
AI Training
After assessing the progress made, the Secretary of State stressed the importance for the Government of Spain of supporting official languages such as Galician: “It responds to our values as a government, since languages are an indispensable pillar for the coexistence, identity and history of our country.”
95% of artificial intelligence in the world is trained in English, seriously harming other cultures and languages such as Galicia, and providing a partial and biased view of the world under the Anglo-Saxon prism.
This program not only makes possible the presence of the Galician in the training of artificial intelligence, but also prevents its digital extinction.
