The deputy delegate of the Government in Lugo, Olimpia López, visited today the associated center of the UNED in Lugo, where she was received by its director, Ana Hind, to know at first hand the work developed by the center in the field of sustainability and climate action. During the visit, the subdelegate congratulated the university community for the recent obtaining of the “Calcula + Reduzco” label corresponding to the year 2024, a recognition granted by the Spanish Office of Climate Change (OECC), an organization dependent on the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
The badge accredits the commitment of the institution with the calculation, registration and reduction of its carbon footprint, as well as the implementation of measures aimed at moving towards more sustainable and efficient management models. In this regard, Olimpia López stressed that “the recognition received by the UNED of Lugo exemplifies the commitment of public institutions with the ecological transition and with the need to incorporate sustainability criteria in their daily activity.”
According to data provided by the center, Lugo’s UNED managed to reduce its emissions intensity by 16.84% during the period 2022-2024, an outcome that allowed it to access this state seal and consolidate a line of continuous progress in environmental matters.
The sub-delegate also stressed the importance of the work carried out by the Lugo-based Green Office of the UNED Partner Centres, a specialized structure that provides technical support in the field of sustainability and carbon footprint calculation to the entire network of partner centres. During the meeting, Olimpia López stressed that “the fight against climate change requires the commitment of administrations, educational institutions and society as a whole”, while valuing the role that UNED plays in the dissemination of knowledge and environmental awareness.
The visit also allowed to learn about the projects and initiatives that the center is developing in the field of environmental innovation and education for sustainability, consolidating its position as a reference within the state network of UNED.
Historic record of enrolment
The director of the UNED of Lugo informed the subdelegate that the center reached in the academic year 2025-2026 an historic maximum of 1,245 students enrolled, which represents an increase of 12.5% compared to the previous academic year and confirms the consolidation of the educational model of the institution in the province.
