The Deputy Delegate of the Government in Lugo, Olimpia López, received today in the Subdelegation of the Government the Rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), Rosa Crujeiras, the Vice-Rector of the Campus of Lugo, Roberto Bande, and the Vice-Rector of Culture, Language and Heritage, Ana Cabana, in an institutional meeting in which they addressed the main challenges and opportunities of the Galician public university and the strategic role of the Terra Campus for the development of the province.
During the meeting, Olimpia López congratulated the rector on her recent election as head of the USC, becoming the first woman to lead the institution in its more than five centuries of history. The subdelegate highlighted her academic career and expressed the conviction that this new stage will contribute to strengthening the role of the university as a driver of knowledge and social progress.
The deputy delegate also reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Spain to public universities and research, noting that “investment in higher education and science is essential to face the economic and demographic challenges of the coming years.”
Special relevance during the meeting was the recovery of the activity and presence of the Vice-Rectorate of the Lugo Campus in O Pazo de Montenegro, a decision that Olimpia López described as “excellent news for the city and for the whole province”.
The subdelegate stressed that this new stage opens the door to the “new air” for Lugo, with a stronger university, innovative and connected to the territory, capable of attracting talent, generating opportunities and contributing to the economic and social development of the province. In addition, he stressed the importance of continuing to strengthen areas that the Terra Campus is already an international reference, such as agri-food production, sustainability, natural resource management and research applied to the rural environment.
Olimpia López also highlighted the presence of two Lucenses in the new USC government team. Thus, he congratulated Roberto Bande on his appointment as vice-rector of the Campus of Lugo and Ana Cabana for his incorporation as vice-rector of Culture, Language and Heritage, highlighting that his knowledge of the reality of the province will contribute to strengthening the connection between the university and the territory.
The deputy delegate concluded by pointing out that “a strong USC is a guarantee of the future for Galicia” and that “a strengthened Lugo Campus with greater decision-making capacity is an extraordinary opportunity to consolidate the city as one of the great ones by the university students of the northwest of the peninsular”.
