The knowledge of our recent past helps to establish our coexistence on a firmer basis, protecting us from repeating mistakes of the past. That is why the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory has among its objectives to promote awareness of the democratic stages of our history and, in addition, of all those people who have contributed with their work and often with their sacrifice so that today we enjoy a regime of a full democracy.
To achieve this purpose, the Secretariat of State, in coordination with other public bodies, administrations and civil society organizations, organizes activities that aim to spread the history of the struggle for the achievement of freedom in our country and to highlight and remember the efforts of all those who stood out in the struggle for freedom.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, this international conference brings together leading experts to examine the democratization processes that transformed Europe during the 20th century. Key milestones such as the end of dictatorships in southern Europe—Portugal, Spain, and Greece—and the revolutions that dismantled communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe will be explored.

2019 marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War and the flight of Spanish republicans to France, North Africa and the American continent. In order to commemorate the Liberal Triennium (1820-1823), the Secretary of State has scheduled a Congress entitled "The Liberal Triennium Two Hundred Years Later. Understand the past, reflect on the present", which will be held in the Senate from May 31 to June 2, 2022. This historical period represented the reimplementation of the Constitution of 1812 and is a symbol, still today, of the struggle of liberalism against the absolutism prevailing in those years.
