The Government Delegation in Galicia has activated in its Alert phase the Winter Plan in the State Road Network in the four Galician provinces. This measure is adopted in front of the predictions issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and will be updated depending on the meteorological parts issued by AEMET in the coming days, since it is foreseeable that the situation will worsen as the hours advance.
Specifically, the AEMET issued an orange level warning from midnight today to midnight tomorrow for significant snow accumulations in the mountains of Lugo and Ourense and in the interior of the province of Pontevedra. This warning decreases to yellow in the rest of the province of Lugo (except A Mariña), as well as in the Miño, in Ourense, and interior of the province of Pontevedra. In any case, given that the forecasts point to a worsening of the situation, The delegation activates the alert phase throughout the Community and asks the population to consult official sources before any displacement or activity abroad.
All resources
The Government Delegation, in accordance with the Coordination Protocol of Actions, mobilizes all available resources in Galicia to neutralize the effects caused by cold and snow on the roads. To this end, it notified this forecast to the bodies involved in road and traffic matters of the State (Road Demarcation, Civil Guard and Northwest-Cantabrian Traffic Management Center), as well as to the other administrations.
The fundamental objective of the activation is to guarantee the maximum possible fluidity of traffic while maintaining the transport infrastructures of state competence in conditions of use.
We remember that, for this campaign, the media of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility contemplates more than 450 professionals, 103 snow-removing machines, 20,000 tons of salt and more than 3,257,000 liters of brine in Galicia.
Recommendations
The Government Delegation recalls that the general protective measures to be taken in the face of a cold and snow storm are:
If you are going to travel
• Request prior information on the state of the roads and the weather situation.
• Avoid travelling by car whenever it is not necessary and use, if possible, public transport.
• If it is essential to use the vehicle, check tires, antifreeze and brakes. In addition, you must be careful to fill the tank or maintain sufficient charge on the batteries, and carry chains and shelter elements.
• It is also advisable to carry a mobile phone and its power device.
• Be very attentive to take special care with the ice plates. It is difficult to determine where in the path they may be formed, although generally gloomy areas are the most common.
if you get caught in the snow
• You must remain in the car, if the storm surprises you inside it.
• It is also advisable to keep the vehicle engine running and the heating on, taking care to renew the air from time to time. It is very important to avoid falling asleep.
• In combustion vehicles, check that the exhaust pipe outlet is kept free at all times so that smoke does not enter the car. • If possible, try to tune in to the radio stations, which will surely inform you of the weather forecasts, the official information on the state of the situation and the indications given about it.
• If you have access to a mobile network, consult the social networks of official agencies and security forces as well as those of proven media.
