- The number of beneficiary households amounts to 65,914, 18.9% are single-parent households; the majority are single-parent households.
- In two-thirds of Madrid’s households with IMV live minors, which are also 41% of the beneficiaries
- The Child Support Supplement has reached 44,837 coexistence units this month
- Since its inception, the IMV has covered more than 300,000 people, of whom more than 130,000 are children and adolescents.
The Minimum Vital Income (IMV) payroll has arrived in February to 65,914 homes in Madrid in those who live 203,306 people, according to the latest statistics published by the National Social Security Institute (INSS). The average amount of the benefit is 624.56 euros per month Per household and, overall, this month’s payroll amounted to €38.95 million.
Madrid
In Madrid, both the profile of the holders and the beneficiaries resembles the national data, concluding that the IMV has a strong female profile. In February, the 69.28% of headline (45,668) and the 54.1% of beneficiaries (110.069) sound women.
Another aspect is the protection of minors, with the IMV reaching two thirds of Madrid’s homes where minors live together, which is also 41% of the beneficiaries. This is how the average of the beneficiaries is located in about 20 years, except the holder in little more than 28 if we include it. In fact, 43,281 Madrid households that support themselves with the IMV have minors in their care more than 65% of them.
The age range of the headlines is in Madrid, mostly between 36 and 55 years old, just over 64%. In February of this year 2026, there were 10,514 active benefits in Madrid more than a year ago, having increased the number of protected households by almost more than 18%. This percentage is similar to the increase in the number of beneficiaries, which has added 19.3% (32,928) since January 2025.
Since its launch in 2020, the IMV has protected 303,013 people in Madrid. The applications that have arrived during that time have been 419,062, of which 102,746 were approved.
Context: women and poverty at the national level
The 2025 Living Conditions Survey conducted by the National Statistical Institute confirms a reduction in the poverty rate among women of working age compared to 2024.
The evolution of the indicators consolidates a trend of general improvement. In this context, the IMV - with two thirds of beneficiaries and more than half of the female headlines - strengthens its role as a key instrument to combat female economic vulnerability, especially in single-parent families, which receive a 22% supplement. In 96% of these households, the only adult person is a woman.
“The risk rate of poverty and social exclusion continues to fall in Spain, to the lowest figure in the historical series, and also among women. The Minimum Vital Income, where two out of three beneficiaries are women, is a decisive tool to reduce this vulnerability and advance in equality. Since its inception, the IMV has protected 1.9 million women,” said the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz.
Enhanced protection for children
The IMV is particularly an essential tool in the fight against child poverty, since it increases the amount of the benefit depending on the number of children in the cohabitation unit. Currently, 40.9% of the beneficiaries are minors, which means 1,013,102 children and adolescents protected by this benefit.
In the second month of the year, more than two-thirds of the families covered by the IMV (559,083 households, 69% of the total) live with minors. Of these, 136,680 are single-parent households.
The Child Support Supplement strengthens IMV coverage with additional support for each dependent child. In February, 560,800 households received it, with an average aid of 66.1 euros per child and 119.9 euros per household with children. This benefit establishes different amounts according to age: 115 euros per month for children under 0 to 3 years; 80.5 euros between 3 and 6 years; and 57.5 euros between 6 and 18 years.
This supplement can be perceived independently of the IMV, since it has broader income thresholds. Así, además de proteger a familias en situación de pobreza severa, alcanza a hogares con rentas bajas o moderadas. For example, it can be requested by a family of two adults and two minors with incomes of up to 4,841.8 euros per month, which significantly expands the scope of the child poverty protection network.
The Minimum Vital Income and young people
The average age of the beneficiaries of the IMV is 28.5 years, which is an important support for young people in situations of exclusion. With the exception of IMV holders, the age drops to 20.1 years.
Precisely, the improvements incorporated into the IMV facilitate access to the benefit for young people in vulnerable situations. For example, people over the age of 18 or emancipated minors with dependent sons or daughters may apply for help. And the period of independent living for young people under 30 years of age has been reduced from 3 to 2 years.
General requirements for applying for the IMV
The IMV is a Social Security benefit that guarantees a minimum level of income to households in vulnerable situations and that was launched more than five years ago. It is configured as a subjective right, adapted to the reality of each unit of coexistence, and constitutes a key instrument in the fight against poverty and social exclusion. To apply for the IMV, it is necessary to have resided in Spain legally, effectively and continuously for at least the previous year. Residence is demonstrated by the registration in the central register of foreigners in the case of Community and Swiss citizens, or with the corresponding authorization in the case of persons from third countries. The domicile in Spain is verified with certificate of registration and the unit of coexistence is demonstrated by means of the family book, civil registration certificates or padronal data.
In addition, both the applicant and the rest of the members of their household must be in a situation of economic vulnerability, as they do not have sufficient income or assets.
The IMV is compatible with work income and includes incentives to promote job placement and improve the living conditions of families. In addition, the new system of double income review implemented allows families to know in advance the update of their benefit. As a result, from the month of May the beneficiaries already know whether, depending on the income of the previous year, their benefit will be increased, reduced or extinguished.
