The deputy delegate of the Government in Lugo, Olimpia López, presided this morning a security board in the hall of the Civil Guard Company of Burela with the participation of representatives of the municipalities of Viveiro, Alfoz, Foz, A Pontenova, Lourenzá, Ciervo, Barreiros, Trabada and Burela, with the aim of advancing the coordination of the necessary actions in view of the total solar eclipse scheduled for August 12, 2026.
The meeting was also attended by officials of the State security forces and bodies, as well as other bodies involved in the operation, in order to strengthen the institutional coordination necessary to organize the security, mobility and emergency mechanisms associated with this astronomical phenomenon.
During the meeting, Olimpia López recalled that “the province of Lugo will be one of the privileged territories for the observation of the eclipse, especially in the Marina area, where the phenomenon can be observed for longer and in optimal conditions”. In this regard, he stressed that a high influx of visitors is expected, which is why it is essential to anticipate planning and coordinate the resources of the different administrations.
“This is an exceptional event that requires planning, collaboration and coordination to ensure security and that citizens can enjoy this experience in ideal conditions,” said the deputy delegate.
Coordination with the municipalities
One of the central aspects addressed at the meeting was the need to strengthen coordination with the municipalities, as administrations closer to the territory and that better know the spaces, accesses and possible points of concentration of people.
In this regard, the Government Subdelegation asked the municipalities to identify preferential observation points, which must have good conditions of visibility and sufficient capacity to accommodate the expected influx.
The definition of these spaces will allow advance planning of security devices, regulate traffic and strengthen emergency services in places where a greater concentration of people is expected.
Safety and mobility device
During the meeting, the main recommendations of security and mobility that should be transferred to the citizens were also addressed. Among them, it highlights the convenience of planning trips in advance and avoiding travel on the same day of the event, due to the forecast of high traffic intensity. Likewise, the need to extreme caution in driving was emphasized, especially because of the sudden darkness that will cause the phenomenon.
It was also recommended to promote the download of the AlertCops application, which allows incidents to be communicated quickly to security forces and bodies.
Recommendations for observation
During the meeting, the basic recommendations for the safe observation of the eclipse were also recalled. In this regard, the authorities insist that you should not look directly into the sun without proper protection, being essential the use of approved glasses to avoid eye damage.

The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 will be the first of three eclipses that can be observed from Spain in the coming years, known as the “Trio of Eclipses 2026-2027-2028”, and will turn Galicia, and especially the province of Lugo, into one of the main observation points of this astronomical phenomenon.
