The Rescue and Mountain Intervention Group (GREIM) of Madrid has made more than 12 interventions on the first weekend of 2026.
The Civil Guard specialists remember that prevention is the first and most important link in the security chain.
The government delegate to the Community of Madrid, Francisco Martín Aguirre, highlighted the work done by the agents of the Special Rescue Group for Mountain Intervention (GREIM) of Madrid that only in the first weekend of 2026 has made more than 12 interventions.
It was during the visit made today to the base that this specialized body of the Civil Guard has in the Port of Navacerrada, covering one of the most frequented mountain environments in the country. Accompanied by the head of the command of the Civil Guard of Madrid, Colonel Carlos de Miguel, the delegate has known at first hand the activity carried out by the 12 specialists that make up the GREIM in the region that is also based in El Escorial.
“I want to thank the Civil Guard and especially this group of professionals from the mountain group, for the extraordinary work they do every day, throughout the year, to provide response and security to the neighbors who go up to the Sierra,” he said.
On the ground, Francisco Martín Aguirre has observed how the activity of this body has been registering a growing trend in recent years due to the rise of hiking and other mountain activities. In this context and due to adverse weather conditions, since the beginning of the 2025-2026 winter season, agents have carried out 31 rescue interventions in the mountains of Madrid, 12 of them in the first weekend of the year.
The rescue on January 4 of five minors with principles of hypothermia in the mountain of Peñalara stands out. Also, the relief actions at the Pico de La Maliciosa to locate a lost hiker; and at the Navacerrada station to assist two skiers in a joint operation with the Red Cross.
Equally noteworthy was the rescue last November of 20 minors and three monitors who were making a route on the World Ball peak. And on the last day of the year, the members of the GREIM assisted three people in incidents distributed between the Navacerrada station itself and the Cabrillas road, in the municipality of Cercedilla,
Importance of planning the outings
From the base of the Port of Navacerrada, the delegate has insisted on a message of prudence and responsibility when climbing the Sierra, highlighting the importance of planning the exits properly, according to the physical and technical limits of each one to prevent accidents.
Knowing the weather forecast; respecting the avalanche signals; making sure you have proper equipment and not just going to the mountains are some of the basic recommendations. In this regard, Civil Guard specialists point to prevention as the first and most important link in the security chain
