- This campaign of 2026 is included in a contract of works to rehabilitate 27.3 kilometers of road on the R-2 highway and on the M-50 highway in the Community of Madrid.
- During this first campaign, the improvement of the M-50 is undertaken between kilometers 12 to 17.5, located in the municipal terms of Paracuellos del Jarama and San Fernando de Henares.
- The work will be carried out at night to minimize the effects on traffic.
- This action is part of SEITT’s investment plan valued at 455 million euros for the correct state of operation of motorways reverted to the State and free sections.
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through the State Society of Terrestrial Transport Infrastructures (SEITT), is going to start the works of rehabilitation of the M-50 firm in the stretch between kilometers 0 to 17.5 and in the inner R-2 between kilometer 0 and kilometer 10.1.
In March 2026, the Council of Ministers authorized the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to tender, through SEITT, the contract of works for the rehabilitation of firmes, in the R-2 interior and M-50 stretch I. The works were awarded on May 27, 2026 for an amount of 19.3 million euros (VAT included) and began in August 2026, having carried out the necessary preliminary works between these dates.
Technical characteristics and development of the works
The current work consists of the milling, replacement and reinforcement of the existing firm layer to improve road safety, comfort of use and its durability. This layer, faced with the increase in traffic experienced by both the M-50 and the R-2 since its entry into service, has reached the end of its useful life and cracks and aging of the mixture are noticeable, being necessary its renewal.
During this first campaign of 2026, the improvement of the M-50 is undertaken between kilometers 12 to 17.5, located in the municipal terms of Paracuellos del Jarama and San Fernando de Henares and includes the renovation of the pavement, road markings and beaconing.
During the works, the necessary alternative deviations will be made, duly signposted, to distribute the traffics in the work environment. These actions will be carried out at night, being carried out whenever possible by lanes so that traffic will be maintained. In the event that a complete cut is necessary, for only one lane or for the safety of the workers, the possible deviations will be indicated appropriately and sufficiently in advance.
Even so, it is recommended that the alternative bypass roads (M-45, M-40) be used, avoiding as much as possible the circulation through the section affected by the works.
SEITT’s investment plan
This work is part of the investment plan of the State Society of Terrestrial Transport Infrastructures (SEITT), a public company under the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. The objective of this plan, endowed with 455 million euros until 2032, is to return to an optimal state of operation the motorways reverted to the State (such as the R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5, and others such as the AP-36, AP-41, AP-7 in Alicante and Cartagena, and the M-12), as well as the free sections managed by the entity, as is the case of the M-50.
The plan includes interventions in eight priority areas: firm rehabilitation, tunnels, structures, signage, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and toll systems, noise reduction, lighting and capacity improvements. Specifically, the rehabilitation of firmes represents 50.8% of the total budget, being therefore the main axis of this modernization program.
