- The latest murder raises 22 women victims of gender-based violence since 2026
The Deputy Delegate of the Government in Lugo, Olimpia López, presided today a minute of silence in front of the Subdelegation of the Government in memory of the 6 women killed in recent weeks by gender violence in Tarragona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Madrid, Alicante, Navarra and Girona, as a sign of strong condemnation against this extreme form of violence against women. During the event, the deputy delegate recalled María Isabel, 58 years old, murdered in Tarragona; María Gema, 57 years old, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Karen Giovanna, 21 years old, in Madrid; La Saida, 44 years old in Navarra; María del Sol, 51 years old, in Alicante; “six women with lives truncated by male violence and who cannot be reduced to figures or statistics”.
Olimpia López conveyed her strongest condemnation of these sexist crimes and expressed her solidarity and affection to families, friends and loved ones. In addition, she warned that “male violence remains one of the most serious expressions of inequality and a direct threat to women’s rights and freedom.”
According to the official data of the Ministry of Equality, with these murders there are already 22 murders due to gender violence so far this year in Spain and 1,363 since there are official records in 2003. Likewise, 68 boys and girls were murdered since 2013 in crimes linked to gender violence against their mothers, leaving 522 minors orphaned.
The subdelegate insisted that “there is no place for indifference or negationism in the face of male violence” and called for collective responsibility to maintain a “united, firm and unfailing” institutional and social response to any form of violence against women.
Finally, Olimpia López recalled the importance of public resources for the care and protection of victims and encouraged citizens to act in the face of any signs of violence. In this regard, he recalled that the telephone 016, the WhatsApp 600 000 016 and the other victim care resources work 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
