- To this end, the damaged elements will be replaced and the waterproofing of the roof and the drainage system will be improved
- In order to homogenise the maintenance conditions of the roof, prolong its useful life and reinforce the safety of this unique space
Adif Alta Celeras has awarded 3.71 million euros to the repair works of the roof of the hypostile room of the Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes station.
This action will improve the state of conservation, safety and maintenance conditions of one of the unique spaces of the station, through the replacement of deteriorated elements and the integral rehabilitation of the roof.
The Hypostyle Hall is one of the most outstanding elements of Puerta de Atocha, designed by the architect Rafael Moneo for the arrival of high speed in Spain and built to give continuity to the historical station. It is a large covered space organized by slender columns that create a clear and orderly structure, with materials such as iron, steel and glass that allow great amplitude and natural light, designed to facilitate the circulation of travelers in an open and functional environment.
Main actions
The project includes a complete analysis of the roof of the Hypostyle Hall, including as planned:
- Replacement of damaged glasses with new materials of higher quality and durability, as well as removal of some deteriorated elements.
- Waterproofing and improvement of the thermal insulation of the cover.
- Installation of new waterproofing and drainage systems (geotextile sheet and filtering pavements). Repair of the access gateway, including pickling and painting.
- Cleaning of drainage elements and replacement of deteriorated downcomers.
These actions will make it possible to standardize the conditions of maintenance of the roof, prolong its useful life and reinforce the security of the infrastructure.
Modernization of Puerta de Atocha
This intervention is integrated into the process of modernization of the railway complex of Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes, which aims to adapt the station to the growth of railway traffic and improve the experience of travelers, which have not stopped increasing in recent years. While in 2022 the station recorded 22.57 million passengers, in 2025 it reached 29.27 million passengers.
Thus, among the main works under execution, the following stand out:
- The remodeling of the historic marquee and its accesses, which will allow to recover its original spaces and turn it into the main access to the station, through staircases, ramps and accessible routes that improve the urban connection from the Plaza de Carlos V and eliminate architectural barriers.
- Reordering of flows and interior spaces, with clearer itineraries and greater capacity to absorb the growth of travelers.
- The installation of five new panoramic elevators in the terminal of exits of the station, faster in both speed and response time than the previous ones, and which will register fewer incidents.
Adif has already completed other actions including the restoration of the historic building, preserving its patrimonial and architectural value, the creation of new spaces for the traveler, such as the new office of Adif About, or the modernization of strategic facilities, such as the Atocha Telecommunications Center.
This action contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), which has among its goals the development of reliable, sustainable, resilient and quality infrastructures.
