- Reopen the viaduct on the Chamartín tracks, which connects the streets Agustín de Foxá and Padre Francisco Palau and Quer, to the west of the station, with the avenue Pius XII and the M-30, to the east.
- The opening takes place once the new high-speed roads have been put into service and the work of structural reinforcement of the area and expansion of the new taxi slab has been completed.
- This is a new milestone to promote the intermodality of the station, after the opening of the underground passage that connects High Speed, Neighbourhoods, Metro and surface.
- The Ministry is investing more than 557 million euros in the remodeling and expansion of Chamartín-Clara Campoamor to turn it into a node of sustainable, connected and intelligent mobility.
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility reaches from this Wednesday, November 5, a new milestone in the transformation of the Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station. From tomorrow, the road traffic that you want to cross or pass through the station is reopened thanks to the reopening of the viaduct of Calle Hiedra, which facilitates the connection of Agustín de Foxá and Padre Francisco Palau and Quer streets, west of the station, with Pio XII and the M-30, east.
Traffic on East Access (Calle Hiedra) has been cut off during Chamartín’s expansion works, which were incompatible with the road traffic passing through the station square. The works carried out have made it possible to build four new high-speed roads (22 to 25), expand the main lobby to the east and build a new slab for the taxi service.
To do this, it was necessary to previously demolish the viaduct slab and the pillars that supported it, to later execute a new slab with reinforced pillars of greater dimensions. This new structure is adapted to the implementation of the four new high-speed tracks that run under the slab.
The recovery of road traffic that crosses from one side of the station to the other is another milestone in the promotion of the intermodality of Chamartín-Clara Campoamor. On October 15th, the lower passage connecting the high-speed tracks and platforms to the Pavements was opened, the Metro and the exit to the surrounding streets.
Restored itineraries and access management
The main itineraries of passing road traffic that are re-established by the station are:
- Paseo de la Castellana - C/ Padre Francisco Palau and Quer with C/ Hiedra -Calle 30 (both senses).
- Paseo de la Castellana – C/ Agustín de Foxá with Calle 30 (Eastern sense).
In order to continue guaranteeing access to Chamartín and make them compatible with the final phase of the work, the current location of some ‘last mile’ transports is maintained. In this way:
- Private vehicles, taxis and VTC that come to leave or pick up travelers to Chamartín, will be able to access and leave both on the West side and on the East side of the square.
- VTC’s pre-contracted services, scheduled taxi pickups, carsharing and coaches are located on Agustín de Foxá Street. Adif has deployed information and signage to guide and drive travelers to these locations.
- The taxi bag is maintained on Hiedra Street and travelers will continue to access through the newly completed lower high-speed passage and the pedestrian walkway.
- Access to Metro remains unchanged from the outside. Since October 15, the access from High Speed is carried out through the underground lobby of Cerca Ías.
- The station parking lots and their operation are also kept in use and unchanged.
A new step towards the season of the future
The completion of this phase of work represents an important step in the remodeling and expansion of Chamartín-Clara Campoamor, in which Adif invests more than 557 million euros, to turn it into a hub of sustainable, connected and intelligent mobility.
This transformation is being carried out in phases to maintain the railway circulation and the operating station at all times, with a constant increase in passengers. Thus, in 2024, Chamartín managed 44.4 million passengers, compared to 36.2 million the previous year.
In addition to doubling the space for trains and high-speed passengers, Chamartín is consolidated as a strategic node of Neighbourhoods. This renovation is carried out prior to and independent of the integral transformation that in the future will be undertaken in the station and its urban environment, within the framework of the Open Ecosystem Chamartín project.
All these actions contribute to the achievement of SDGs 9 (promotion of reliable, sustainable and quality infrastructure), 11 (access to safe, accessible and sustainable transport systems), 8 (contribution to economic growth and employment) and 7 (energy efficiency).

This action will have European funding through the “Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan financed by the European funds NextGenerationEU.
