The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has announced around 150 million euros in investments in the port of Santander from 2025 to 2029, which will allow this strategic infrastructure of the State to improve its competitiveness and boost its growth.
This is stated in the investment plan of State Ports which was presented this Thursday by the minister during the informative breakfast organized by Diario del Puerto in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. State Ports is the public agency under the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility responsible for coordinating the Spanish port system, which is composed of 46 ports of general interest managed by 28 Port Authorities.
According to the data collected in the ‘Horizon 2030’ investment framework of the Spanish port system, Cantabria is the ninth Autonomous Community with the highest volume of investment in this period, after Catalonia, Andalusia, the Valencian Community, Galicia, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Murcia and the Basque Country.
Of the 150 million euros planned for the port of Santander from 2025 to 2029, some 122 million euros will be allocated to improve its infrastructure and facilities, which will allow it to meet the needs of demand and future challenges. This amount represents more than 80% of the total investments planned.
Secondly, for projects linked to the sustainability of the port, 11.5 million are envisaged, reaffirming the fundamental role of these infrastructures as the spearhead of the energy transition in Spain.
For the strengthening of security, 8 million are planned; for the improvement of access to the port, 6.3 million, since Guaranteeing its connectivity is essential to boost competitiveness; and for its digitisation, around one million euros.
In this Cantabrian port, it is expected that more than half of the investment will be executed between the years 2025 and 2026. Specifically, the annual breakdown is as follows:
· About 51.5 million euros in 2025.
· About 41.5 million euros in 2026.
· About 26.4 million euros in 2027.
· About 17.2 million euros in 2028.
· About 12.4 million euros in 2029.
Among the projects under way in this territory, the first phase of the pier Raos 6 to expand its capacity by generating more berthing line. This first phase consists of the execution of a new multipurpose pier of 212 meters.
In addition, it is planned to expand the vertical silo of automobiles, one of the main traffic of the port of Santander, which is the fourth of the port system by volume of this type of merchandise. This work will provide the port with more operational capacity and will increase the efficiency of the vehicle terminal, by placing it next to the docks and next to the railway apartment.
