Renfe transported almost 2,500 passengers on AV trains between León and Asturias during the December bridge, 225% more than in 2022
The train service through the Variant was inaugurated on November 30
December 13, 2023.- Renfe has transported over 25,000 passengers on the Asturias-Madrid High Speed (AV) trains during the last December bridge. On the occasion of the first holidays of December, demand and travel in the new services have skyrocketed, which Renfe began to provide on November 30, with the premiere of the new AV infrastructure of the Variant of Pajares, which allows travel times to be shortened by at least one hour.
Travelers between the Principality and the capital, and vice versa, grew more than 26% during the bridge compared to the same dates last year, reaching the figure of 25,100. The high demand was even higher in percentages on the routes between León and Asturias, with an increase in passengers of more than 225% (almost 2,500 users).
The high demand for passengers on trains has been notorious during the bridge of December 2023, with several holidays chained by non-working days on day 6 (celebration of the Constitution) and day 8 (the Immaculate), joined at weekends.
On November 2, Renfe put tickets on sale to travel between Asturias and Madrid between November 30, the day of the inauguration of the train service, and February 15, 2023.
Renfe leads the way to sustainability
Renfe has the ‘Carbon Neutral’ certification granted by AENOR for all our electric trains for both passengers and goods, which highlights the commitment to sustainability and the objective of being more efficient in the use of electric traction energy, through efficient driving plans and the use of regenerative braking.
Renfe’s passenger and freight electric trains ensure that there are no direct emissions (there are no combustion processes) and being 100% renewable electricity, it is possible to talk about decarbonisation or “carbon neutrality” as there are no indirect emissions either at source.
The daily circulation of all Renfe trains (Renfe Travellers and Renfe Goods) avoids the emission of 4.1 million tonnes of CO2 per year and entails energy savings equivalent to more than 1.1 million tonnes of oil equivalent.
