June 29, 2023.- The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has litigated, after its approval in the Board of Directors of Adif, the construction works of the new Railway Complex of Valladolid, which involves an investment of 71.8 million euros (VAT included) and which will have financing of the Recovery Plan. The second phase of the project is thus promoted, which, together with the Eastern Variant, will turn Valladolid into a hub for freight transport by train and railway technology and innovation.
The action includes the construction of the new freight transport terminal, which will be part of the network of strategic intermodal nodes, as well as a track technology center, the Redalsa center (a company of the Adif group specializing in lanes and detours) and a maintenance base.
In this way, all the actions that make up the construction of the Eastern Variant and the Valladolid Railway Complex are already underway. Infrastructure that refurbishes the city’s railway network and will speed up freight and passenger traffic by preventing it from passing through the Alicante-Campo Grande station. In addition, they will recover urban spaces by moving to the new complex facilities currently located in different points of the capital.
New logistics terminal of 230.000 m2
The new freight terminal of Valladolid, which will host the activities of the facilities of La Esperanza and Argales, will be erected in the center of the new complex. With 230,000 square meters (m2) of surface, it will have a technical installation composed of 7 tracks of more than 750 m for reception and expedition of trains; a loading and storage area of containers, a management building, parking areas of vehicles and a logistics expansion area.
The new Vía Technology Center and the Redalsa center will have 12,000 m2 and 140,750 m2 , respectively, to house, with more space and endowments, the facilities of the Argales industrial estate. In addition, a 2,700-square-metre Adif maintenance base will be built to house workshops and warehouses, as well as offices and other facilities.
Rail freight transport impetus
The Ministry is thus promoting this complex as it advances in the construction of its road beach, with an investment of 19.5 million euros (VAT included), and the Eastern Variant, in which the signaling and telecommunications facilities are currently deployed -for 17.8 million (VAT included)-, and the contracting to assemble its tracks and its electrification system, for 12.3 million euros (VAT included).
The Variant This railway line of Valladolid, of 17.5 km, is a conventional double and wide track line that will channel the circulation of all the freight trains of the Madrid-Hendaya line, bypassing its passage through the city and the station, and connecting with the new Railway Complex. Its route includes a viaduct of 1.1 km and a tunnel of 2.2 km.
These actions contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9, which promotes reliable, sustainable and quality infrastructures; 8 (contribution to economic growth and job creation) and 11 (inclusive and sustainable cities).
This action will be supported by European funding from the NextGenerationEU funds through the European Recovery Plan.
