Adif AV gives a new impetus to the construction of the High-Speed Line (LAV) Palencia-Santander by contracting the construction works of the fifth stretch of its route, between the Palentine towns of Calsalvo de Boedo and Alar del Rey (13.7 km), with an investment of 109.3 million euros.
In this way, Adif AV has already contracted or under construction all the sections in which the construction of the platform of the new LAV between Palencia and Alar del Rey is structured, amounting to 78.4 km.
The extension from Alar del Rey to Cantabria has the informative study of the Nogales de Pisuerga-Reinosa High Speed Line definitively approved by Mitma. The planned investment in this route, which includes the refurbishment of the Aguilar de Campóo (Palencia) station, is 800 million euros. The new layout, independent of the conventional line, has high speed characteristics (double electrified track and standard width).
More than 13 new km running
The works of this section, which will be carried out by the construction company OHL, will complete 13.7 km of platform of the new line, which will be of single track, standard width and for passenger train traffic, as it passes through Calsalvo de Boedo, Páramo de Boedo, Herrera de Pisuerga, Prádanos de Ojeda and Alar del Rey; all of them in the province of Palencia.
Among the unique structures of the route are the construction of two viaducts, to circumvent the crosses with the rivers Boedo (126 m in length) and Burejo (182 m). In addition, a 252.7 m crossing structure will be implemented under the A-67 motorway and the P-231 road.
Boost to the high-speed connection with Cantabria
Adif gives a new impetus to the high-speed connection between Palencia and Santander, to which it allocates an investment of 1.7 billion euros and which, in addition to the line to Alar del Rey, includes the route to Reinosa (in the drafting phase of projects and studies).
The five sections to Alar del Rey in contracted or under construction platform works are:
Palencia-Palencia Norte (1.3 km): work started in March 2023, with an investment of 26.9 M€
Palencia Norte-Amusco (20.8 km): execution started in October 2021, with an investment of 77.3 M€
Amusco-Osorno (21.9 km): the performance started in July 2021, with an investment of 79.3 M€
Osorno-Calsalvo de Boedo (20.7 km), awarded with an investment of 93.5 M€
Calsalvo de Boedo-Alar del Rey (13.7 km) awarded with a budget of 109.3 M€
The connection with Santander, for its part, materializes through the conventional network, in which it is planned to duplicate the Renedo-Guarnizo and Muriedas-Santander sections and execute various improvement actions in the rest of the sections on the Torrelavega - Santander route.
The new line will favor Santander’s communications with the center of the country, reducing travel times and reinforcing its reliability and comfort, while increasing traffic capacity.
This action contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9, 8 and 7.
European funding
The construction works of the platform of the Osorno-Calahorse sections of Boedo and Calahorse of Boedo-Alar del Rey can be financed by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Mechanism (CEF).
