- The president of Renfe announced today that the company will connect by train Catalunya and Occitania and Basque Country and New Aquitaine
- The new routes will be born with a vocation of public service to generate greater cohesion and sustainable mobility between nearby cities
Renfe is already working on the next steps in its roadmap to become a reference operator in the French market. The president of the company, Raül Blanco, has announced today that the company will start new cross-border public service routes to connect Catalonia and the Basque Country with the south of France from 2024.
The project for the eastern connection, between Catalonia and the French region of Occitania, will be concretized in new high-speed frequencies between Barcelona and Perpignan and the extension to the city of Toulouse.
The services, which will have an Avant service tariff consideration, will connect Barcelona, Girona and Figueras with Perpignan doubling the frequencies to this station and will also have at least one extension to Toulouse, with an intermediate stop in Carcassonne.
On the western side, Renfe plans to connect San Sebastian with Hendaye and Bayonne, creating routes between the Basque Country and the French region of New Aquitaine.
Both projects, which are expected to take place in 2024, involve creating new cross-border transport relations between cities very close to both sides of the border, generating a more sustainable mobility network and taking a further step in the positioning of Renfe as a provider of transport services in France.
The announcement comes a day after the company has presented the offer of AVE trains with which it will begin its commercial operation alone in France, and which is specified in two routes to Lyon and Marseille that will begin to be sold from tomorrow.
