The deputy delegate of the Government, María Rivas, said goodbye today at the Military Airfield of Santiago, together with the Head of the Military Airfield of Santiago, Juan Pedro Velázquez Gaztelu, and the minister conselleira in the Embassy of Romania in Spain, Alina Popescu, to the contingent of firefighters from Romania who during the last week served in Galicia, to support the tasks of extinguishing the forest fires that devastated the community this summer.
Rivas conveyed on behalf of the Government of Spain “the deepest gratitude for the work done”, stressing that “with professionalism, discipline and humanity, they protected the Galician population in extreme conditions, putting their lives at risk and demonstrating a great spirit of sacrifice”.
The representative of the Central Executive stressed that the presence of this team of 51 personnel was possible “thanks to the joint work of the institutions and the effort of the Government of Spain, which not only immediately mobilized national resources—the Military Emergency Unit, reinforcement brigades, air and land resources—but also activated, through Civil Protection of the Ministry of the Interior, European mechanisms at the request of the Autonomous Community.”
“This coordination allowed the deployment of an unprecedented device, which united national capacity with the strength of international cooperation,” he said.
Finally, Rivas highlighted the solidarity and diplomacy of this mission, recalling that “the firefighters of Romania represent the best of cooperation between our peoples and of the European spirit”. His presence here “was not only a technical help, it was also a diplomatic mission of fraternity between Romania and Spain,” he said.
