The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, supervised today the execution of the project of humanization of the Avenue of As Pías, in Ferrol, which will transform 1.11 km of this road entrance into an urban boulevard. The delegate was accompanied by the deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, and by the deputy mayor of Ferrol, Javier Díaz. Pedro Blanco exemplified in this work a new fulfilled commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez with the city of Ferrol: “We are a government committed to Ferrol and its region, with announcements and facts: improving communications but also boosting the naval sector, preserving heritage and promoting sustainable tourism.”
The remodeling of the Avenue of As Pías responds to a historical demand of the citizens of Ferrol, especially of the neighborhoods that will now be communicated directly through the new boulevard: Esteiro, Ultramar, Caranza, O Bertón, Telleiras and the Ensanches. This action will also promote sustainable mobility and make cities, which will mean a notable improvement in the quality of life of the neighborhood.
These qualities make the work of As Pías an “example of urban integration”. The delegate recalled that this action also shows how the Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan is reaching all Galician municipalities to transform communications and improve the quality of life of citizens.
In the case of Ferrol, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda invests 9.7 million euros of the funds of the Recovery Plan in the simultaneous execution of the two sections in which this remodeling is divided. “We are betting on a new management of our roads and we work for a sustainable, safe and connected mobility,” said Pedro Blanco, who added that “in four years we doubled the investments in roads, with 777 million invested in Galicia, of which 259 million are destined for this province of A Coruña.”
Description of the work
The Ministry of Transport is humanizing the avenue of the Pias in two sections: the connection of the road with Caranza Street (from the kilometric point 0+000 to 0+600 of the FE-14) and the connection of Caranza with the Berton (from 0+600 to 1+100). The two stages are running simultaneously.
The project as a whole is funded by the Urban Environment Improvement Action Programme of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which is funded by 105 million European NextGenerationEU reconstruction funds.
The project includes the following elements:
- Suppression of the link with the FE-11 and conversion into roundabout.
- Removal of the Caranza link and conversion to glorieta.
- Reform of the Avenue of Santa Cruz. The slope of Marqués de Santa Cruz Avenue is eliminated and a new avenue is created instead. The action carried out by the City Council for the recovery of the Telleiras neighborhood is continued, La Street is paved, and Lepanto Street is improved.
- Conversion of the FE-14 into an urban avenue, reducing the widths of the road, with elimination of arches and reduction of the width of lanes, maintaining a cross-section of two lanes per direction, and increasing in number of parking spaces along the road.
- Improvement of urban permeability, eliminating the pre-existing “barrier effect” generated by the old FE-14.
- Regeneration of the margins, through the creation of new pedestrian, cycling and leisure itineraries. It includes areas intended for sport and rest with a total area of more than 55,000 m2.
- Bike lane parallel to the FE-14, which will have connection, through the Marqués de Santa Cruz Avenue, with the existing one on the Caranza promenade.
- Provision of complementary services. The performance is equipped with urban lighting both on the road and in the pedestrian areas. Semaphorization will also be installed on demand in the main zebra passages, to give priority to the pawn over the vehicle.
