O Barco de Valdeorras, March 2, 2023 (Mitma)
The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) is making steady progress in the execution of the variant works of O Barco de Valdeorras. This was highlighted by the General Secretary of Infrastructure, Xavier Flores, who visited today the connection works between the N-120 and N-536 roads, in the stretch between Sobradelo and O Barco de Valdeorras, in the province of Ourense, which have a total investment of 62.8 million euros (VAT included).
During the visit, the ministerial representative was accompanied by the deputy delegate of the Government in Ourense, Emilio González Afonso, and the mayor of O Barco de Valdeorras, Alfredo García, and other institutional representatives.
According to Flores, this action, executed and financed by the Ministry, will connect in a comfortable and safe way to the N-536 and N-120 roads in the vicinity of O Barco de Valdeorras, serving as a variant of population to avoid the frequent passage of slate trucks from nearby quarries and other vehicles through its urban center.
In addition, the route of the N-536 is extended, increasing road safety, as well as the protection of vulnerable: cyclists and pedestrians, finally contributing to the improvement of road communications in the region of Valdeorras.
Technical characteristics of the works
The works, which are executed over a length of 5.6 km, begin in Sobradelo at the kilometric point (P.K.) 41.5 of the N-536 at the intersection with the OU-122 and end at P.K. 453.4 of the N-120 in O Barco de Valdeorras.
The performance consists of two distinct parts:
1. A first sub-section of road conditioning and improvement of the N-536 from Sobradelo, with a length of about 3.3 km with a cross-section composed of a road of 7 m, lanes of 3.50 m per direction and external arches of 1.50 m.
2. A second sub-stretch of road in variant of about 2.3 km, between the N-536 and the N-120. The cross-section of the variant stretch is 12 m, with 3.50 m rails and 2.50 m outer arches. This subsection crosses the river Sil through a 405 m viaduct and the mount of O Serro, through a 490 m tunnel, to finally link with the road N-120 through the viaduct on the river Cigüeño, tributary of the Sil.
Thus, the total length of the performance is 5.6 km, the minimum radius is 375 m and the maximum longitudinal slope is 4.8%.
In the stretch, two new knots are projected:
· The first of these, coincides with the P.K.45 of the current N-536 and is designed as an intersection in "T", equipped with central waiting and speed change lanes.
· The second, at the end of the stretch, is a new diamond-like link with upper roundabout, which serves as a connection between the new variant and the N-120 in the P.K. environment. 453.4. This new link has been designed and planned to accommodate the passage of the section of the future A-76 motorway: Ponferrada-Ourense, and it will also give access to the OU-622 and other vials of the nucleus of O Barco de Valdeorras.
A total of 10 structures will be built along the route: 6 viaducts, 3 upper steps and 1 lower step.
Of particular note are the 405 m long viaduct on the river Sil, which also saves the railway line and the OU-0801 road of Éntoma, and the 258 m long viaduct on the river Cigüeño.
Following the viaduct on the river Sil, under the mount of O Serro, the construction of a tunnel of a single bidirectional tube, of 490 m in length and constant slope of 3% has been planned.
Highlight that the work has foreseen all the necessary measures of environmental integration and protection of the cultural heritage, such as the preservation of the old “Ponte de Candís” and the “Roman auriferous exploitation of A Veiga”, as well as the creation of a pedestrian promenade and segregated bicycle path along the N-536.
