September 12, 2023.- The Railway Infrastructure Manager (Adif) has awarded the Ute Peyco-Velber the Consultancy and Technical Assistance Services for the Drafting of the Study of Alternatives and the Construction Project of the Refurbishment of the Soria Station "El Cañuelo" for a total of 304,561 euros, including taxes, and with an execution time of 26 months. The project will focus on the recovery of the historical value of the station, its accessibility and functionality, urban integration and the enhancement of the square.
The Minister of Mobility, Transport, and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, on her visit on March 16 of this year to see the works of the Soria-Torralba, counted the rehabilitation of the El Cañuelo station by five million euros.
In turn, the media were informed about this refurbishment on November 14 of last year after the working meeting held in the City of Soria between the delegate of the Government of Castilla y León, Virginia Barcones; the mayor of Soria, Carlos Martínez; and the president of Adif, Mª Luisa Domínguez, accompanied by her technical team.
Adif as a public business entity under the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda is tackling an ambitious refurbishment of the railway station of Soria, with a triple objective: the recovery of the architectural memory, with the enhancement of the four facades of the passenger building, designed by Luis Gutiérrez Soto, one of the main architects of the early twentieth century; the improvement of the interior spaces of the passenger building intended for public use, that is, the whole ground floor; and the empowerment of the access plaza to the station, urbanizing the spaces with a greater pedestrian character.
The Functional Study of Architecture of the station proposes to recover its facade, hidden behind an intervention made in the middle of the last century. To do this, the plasters of the ground floor will be eliminated, until reaching the old arches that crowned it, both on the facade towards the car patio and towards the access to the platforms, restoring the necessary elements. Likewise, the carpentry offices will be renovated and the marquees will be rehabilitated to access the passenger and platform building, respecting its historical character.
The project will ‘discover’ the heritage and the railway memory of the building and will also adapt the spaces intended for the traveler. In addition, the luminaires located on the facade of the building will be recovered and others will be integrated into the new pavement of the station, thus configuring a new vision of the recovered architecture.
In the station square, a paved space will be generated that will resolve the pedestrian routes, thus underlining the monumental character that it had in its day. In this sense, Adif will coordinate with the City Council the ordination of pedestrian access, bicycle and road traffic to the station, as well as the improvement of urban accessibility.
During the aforementioned meeting, in addition, the City of Soria and Adif agreed to the constitution of a technical working group, to analyze the urban aspects of the elements of the city in which Adif participates. The work will be completed with the establishment of collaboration instruments that allow the development of the solutions agreed by both parties
On the other hand, it should be remembered that Adif has mobilized investments of more than 75 million, aimed at the renewal of the Soria-Torralba line and the installation of the GSM-R railway signalling and communication systems, which guarantee permanent contact between the train drivers and the Traffic Regulation Centers (CRC) of Adif. The renewal of the Torralba-Soria line is funded by the European Union- NextGenerationEU.
