The Council of Ministers has today authorized the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to tender, through Adif, the execution of the first phase of works of the new intermodal station of the city of Gijón with an estimated value of 40.8 million euros (VAT not included).
This first phase includes the urbanization of the area of the viaduct of Karl Marx and is essential for the subsequent execution of the railway part of the project, as well as the new intermodal station, foreseen in the second phase.
Actions in the first phase
The first phase includes the demolition of the Calle Carlos Marx viaduct, 350 meters long, and of the lower passage that is under the structure, replacing it with a new road on the surface between the avenue of José Manuel Palacio Álvarez, at the height of the gardens of Federico González-Fierro Boots, and the roundabout of Calle Carlos Marx with the avenue of Portugal.
In addition, there will be a new roundabout between Carlos Marx and Sanz Crespo streets, at the height of the current station, which in the future will give continuity to Sanz Crespo Street. Likewise, the glorieta-hippodrome of José Manuel Palacio Álvarez Avenue will be rearranged, giving continuity to all the side streets that converge in it.
All this new urban road will allow better access to the current railway station, facilitating its fit into the urban fabric.
New collector and ramps for access to the future parking
In addition, it highlights the implementation of a new large-section collector that will replace the two collectors that run in the immediate vicinity of the current station. The collector will run under Karl Marx Street, including the crossing well that will serve as part of the future connection of the railway line with the Metrotran tunnel. This element will be assumed in the second phase as an integral part of the new railway tunnel of the Metrotrén.
On the other hand, the access ramps from Carlos Marx Street will be executed to the future underground parking of the intermodal station, foreseen in the second phase, as well as the adaptation for the passage of vehicles of the cover slab of the storm tank located in José Manuel Palacio Álvarez Avenue.
Urbanization and temporary parking
The contract that is now authorized contemplates the urbanization of the environment of the future intermodal station, integrating the existing elements, while new service facilities are deployed on Karl Marx Street. This includes drainage works, establishing a segregated network of sanitation and storerooms, and the installation of urban furniture. For its part, the gardens of Federico González-Fierro will be adapted to this urban reorganization, maintaining the existing pedestrian routes.
In addition, the existing surface parking areas in the area will be remodelled according to the new layout of Karl Marx Street and the continuity of the bike path in the area will be maintained.
Once completed, the works will be delivered to the City Council for its commissioning and maintenance, except for the ramps of the future parking lot and the crossing well, under the main collector, which will be owned by Adif.
Convention for the development of the intermodal station
The tender for the works to eliminate the viaduct of Karl Marx is part of the agreement signed last April by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif, with the Principality of Asturias and the City of Gijón, after being previously authorized by the Council of Ministers.
With a maximum cost of 54.3 million euros with VAT (which includes, among other expenses, technical assistance contracts for the execution of the works), Adif assumes in this first phase investments worth 34.09 million euros, while the Principality of Asturias and the City of Gijón will contribute 10.1 million euros each.
The development of the new intermodal station of Gijón is also part of the protocol signed by the Ministry of Transport, the Principality, the City Council, Adif and the society Gijón al Norte to promote the integration of the railway in the city. The project resolves, on the one hand, the connection of the conventional wide commuter line with the Metrotrén de Gijón tunnel and, on the other hand, the actions related to the new intermodal station and its surroundings.
