The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, has taken stock of the withdrawal, treatment and destruction of cayucos and pateras in the Canary Islands, to which he committed himself on December 1 during his visit to the port of La Restinga on the island of El Hierro.
The minister stressed that “in less than a month, 155 cayucos have already been withdrawn, 75 from the port of El Hierro (La Restinga) and 80 from the port of Gran Canaria (Arinaga). Most of them have already been destroyed.” Ángel Víctor Torres, who met today, together with the Ministers of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, and of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, with the European Commissioner of Interior Affairs, Ylva Johanson, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has stressed that the measure has been possible in the first place with the 800,000 euros destined for El Hierro, fund approved by the Government on November 28, due to the emergency situation created by saturation of cayucos and pateras in the Port of La Restinga.
