National Historical Archive

The National Historical Archive since its foundation was constituted as “historical archive of the kingdom of Spain”, with the character of a public archive. It is created to collect the documentation produced by the organs of the State Administration that no longer has administrative value, but has historical value. Currently, documents classified as historic must be transferred to their warehouses, because they have overcome the rational and mandatory deletions established by the Spanish Historical Heritage Law in its article 58.

Its functions are: to preserve and protect the historical documentary heritage that already guards and that which should continue to arrive (since it is an open archive), to describe the informative contents of the documents, and to make the documentary funds accessible to both the researcher and the citizen, as well as to enhance the cultural dissemination of the same. The National Historical Archive is the institution that preserves and guards the documentation produced and received by the bodies that make up the administrative apparatus of the Spanish State since the Modern Age, as well as other documentary funds of public and private institutions since the Middle Ages.
