The Government Delegation today welcomed a minute’s silence condemning the murder of Oriana Valentina of 29 years in Alicante on December 2, Rossmery of 39 years in Toledo on December 3, Jennifer of 30 years in Seville on December 6 and Sayuri of 36 years in Barcelona on December 9, and reiterated its heartfelt condolences to her relatives and friends.
During her speech, the Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, described these four murders as a “brutal and unbearable fact for a democratic society that cannot normalize this violence”. “Four women murdered in just a few days remind us with all cruelty that male violence does not rest, nor on dates that should be of encounter and care,” he lamented.
The highest representative of the Government of Spain in the city has also stressed that this violence “manifests itself in multiple forms, often invisible”, recalling that in 2025 45 women have been killed and 31 minors have been orphaned. Since 2003, 1,340 women have been murdered in Spain. Since 2013, 65 boys and girls have been killed for gender-based violence against their mothers and 500 girls and boys have been orphaned by gender-based violence in Spain.
Increase in male violence in the holiday period
In this regard, she has warned that vacation periods pose a greater risk for many women victims of gender violence, “because they spend more time with their aggressor and because the spaces for escape, support and detection are reduced.”
However, the Government Delegate wanted to stress firmly that “we cannot fall into speeches that indirectly end up pointing the finger at the victims.” “When we talk about the danger of Christmas, the danger of the holidays or family arguments, we are erasing the real danger, which is none other than the abuser,” he warned.
Moh has insisted on the need to change the social and media approach to this structural violence. “Male violence is not caused by dates, dinners or family tensions. It is provoked by men who decide to exercise violence against women. And that’s what we can’t stop saying loud and clear,” he said.
Duty of the whole society
The highest representative of the Spanish Government in the city has also appealed for collective responsibility. “This is not a private issue or an issue that affects only those who directly suffer from it. It is a problem for the whole society and it is only through social involvement, collective consciousness and zero tolerance that we can move forward,” he said.
In this regard, he has appealed not to look the other way and to use the available resources. “It is essential that the environment acts, that it is asked, that it is accompanied and that the protection network is activated when there is a minimum suspicion. Saving a life can depend on a call, a gesture or not keeping silent,” he said.
From the Ministry of Equality, through the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, it is recalled that telephone 016 and the other services of attention and advice are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and are accessible to all people.
Also, in an emergency situation you can call 112 or the emergency telephones of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). In case it is not possible to make a call and in a situation of danger, you can use the ALERTCOPS application, from which an alert signal will be sent to the police with geolocation.
