The Community of Madrid makes positive progress in the Road Safety Strategy 2030 according to the accident indicators recorded in the region in 2024 and 2025, analyzed today at the Fifth Autonomous Commission of Traffic and Road Safety of Madrid, chaired by the Government delegate in the Community of Madrid.
A forum in which the figures and measures for Operation Summer 2025 have also been addressed with more than 20.7 million expected displacements. To this end, together with the delegate, the provincial head of Traffic of Madrid, Cristóbal Cremades and the inspector commander of the Traffic Services of the Community of Madrid, Antonio Cuadros González, have intervened. Also representatives of the General Directorate of Traffic, the Civil Guard, the General Demarcation of Roads, the Community of Madrid, representatives of the local administration designated by the Federation of Municipalities of Madrid, as well as associations and groups of civil society participating, among others, of autoschools, motorcyclists or victims of traffic accidents.
In terms of accident statistics, the Community of Madrid recorded 69 deaths in intercity road accidents in 2024, which represented a 10.4% reduction compared to 2023. Despite its population density, the region only concentrated 6% of the national total.
So far in 2025, the number of people killed is 26, three fewer than in 2024, despite the fact that there have been more fatal accidents, which shows an improvement in post-accident care and in the effectiveness of safety systems. However, despite the decrease in the number of fatalities, among the indicators with room for improvement is the reduction of serious injuries, with 102 injuries hospitalized in 2024, compared to 127 in 2023, but still far from 92 in 2019.
In this context, the delegate commented that “starting from zero accident as a goal, it is confirmed that, thanks to the work of many professionals and the responsibility of citizens, we are gradually reducing the number of deaths on the road. Even so, despite moving closer to the goals of the 2030 strategy, we still have a long way to go. Hence the commitment of all those present at the meeting to continue working on road safety in our Community.”
Operation Summer: More than 20.7 million trips
Along with the accident figures, the Commission has addressed the Operation Summer 2025 in which the General Directorate of Traffic forecasts more than 20.7 million trips in the Community of Madrid. The first major ‘Operation Departure’ is expected on the weekend of July 4-6 with 846,773 scheduled trips. Beyond this first weekend, the number of trips planned for the whole month of July amounts to 10,218,935 movements, a figure slightly lower than the 10,467,005 movements expected in August and which gives as a total forecast some 20,685,940 trips for the whole summer (from Monday 1 July to Saturday 31 August 2025.
Measures
Among the measures implemented in the Community of Madrid, special speed and alcohol control campaigns will be carried out at the wheel in July and August; and the signage with variable message panels for the accesses and parking areas of the recreational and bathing areas of the mountains has been completed. Likewise, as in previous years, specific devices will be implemented for Portugal’s Paso del Strait and Paso operations; and collaboration will be tightened for the fire campaign.
Among other technical means, Operation Summer in the Community of Madrid will have 2 helicopters and 4 drones.
Along with the reinforcement of media and collaboration between administrations, Francisco Martín Aguirre, has highlighted the importance of citizen collaboration, appealing “to the responsibility and prudence of the people of Madrid who put themselves at the wheel this summer”,
