The crime rate clarified by the security FFCC from January to June of this year is 5 points higher than in all 2022
The proportion of criminal offenses that have been clarified by the Security Forces and Corps in the Balearic Islands between January and June of this year exceeds by five points the percentage of all 2022. In particular, according to the Ministry of the Interior’s balance sheet for the first half of 2023, nearly 42 crimes out of 100 have been resolved in this period, compared to 37 in 2022, and the rate of arrests and investigations has stood at 250 for every thousand infractions, compared to 218 last year.
In the last twelve months, an average of 66 crimes per thousand inhabitants have been recorded in the archipelago. The indicator remains below the value recorded in 2019, just before the pandemic; in 2020 and 2021 crime was reduced to rates of 51 and 52 crimes per thousand inhabitants, due to the effect of confinements and mobility restrictions, while in 2019 this rate rose to 67.6 crimes per thousand inhabitants. By islands, there are no significant variations from the last report, corresponding to the first quarter. Thus, Mallorca remains at 65.7 criminal acts for every thousand inhabitants, while in Ibiza it stands at 81.7, in Menorca, at 44.3, and in Formentera it borders the 56 crimes for every thousand inhabitants.
On the other hand, in the first six months of this year, 35,221 criminal offenses have been committed in the Balears, 4.9% more than in the same period of 2022. By typology, thefts are the most numerous, with 9,721 cases, although their incidence drops by 2.1% compared to the same period of 2022. Homicides, attempted murders and house robberies are also on the decline. In the case of crimes against sexual freedom, although in general they have risen by 16.7%, on the contrary, sexual assaults with penetration have decreased by 7%.
As far as cybercrime is concerned, overall it has increased by 19% in the islands, mainly due to the effect on the statistics as a whole of computer scams, of which there are 27.6% more cases. Other crimes committed over the internet are reduced by about 24%. Finally, the subtractions in agricultural or livestock farms rose by 30.8% compared to the first half of 2022.
In the whole of Spain, the crime rate is 50.3 crimes per thousand inhabitants. Illes Balears heads, together with Catalonia (63.3) and Madrid (59.9), the communities with the highest incidence. It is followed by the Comunitat Valenciana (54.2) and Navarra (50.9). The archipelago has historically led this indicator, because the rate is calculated on the registered population, without taking into account the existence of a large floating population, as it is a tourist destination.
In Palma, the crime rate remains at the same levels as last year, with almost 84 cases per thousand inhabitants, as well as Marratxí -around 35 cases - and Santa Eulària des Riu -54 cases. Among the rest of the municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, in Calvià the crime rate drops by three points and stands at 98 cases per thousand inhabitants. The rest experience slight increases in the number of criminal offenses compared to the same period of 2022.
