The subdelegate of the Government in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, announced today the continuity of the works of rehabilitation of the firm on the N-540 road, during a technical visit made to the kilometric point 57 of the road, in the municipality of Chantada. The action, promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, will enter a new phase starting in May, with the complete renewal of the stretch between Chantada and Lugo.
During the visit, Rodríguez was accompanied by Iago Fonteboa, technical engineer of Public Works of the MITMS in Lugo; Begoña Abeledo, head of construction of the contractor company Taboada and Ramos; and Óscar Catoira, of the technical assistance of control and surveillance, in addition to the mayor of Taboada, Roi Rigueira, and various public representatives of the municipalities of the region.
“The government continues to support the modernization of the state road network in the province of Lugo. This work is fundamental to ensure safe and efficient mobility, especially on a road with as much traffic as the N-540,” said the subdelegate, adding that “we know of the need of road users to undertake these actions, but we insist on the commitment of the Government with facts to respond and solve this problem.”
More than 68 km of performance and 11 million euros of investment
The work includes the integral rehabilitation of the firm between the kilometers 0.000 and 68,900 of the N-540 as it passes through the province of Lugo. It includes structural and superficial renovation of the firm, as well as complementary actions aimed at maintaining the service levels of the infrastructure. The project includes the milling of the existing firm, with successive layers and adhesion applications.
In the most deteriorated areas will be executed the complete demolition of the package of firmes and the excavation of a meter of depth to replenish the layers from the base. The sides will also be regularized and the horizontal and vertical signage will be improved.
Improved safety for drivers, cyclists and motorists
The subdelegate stressed that the intervention represents a qualitative leap in road safety: “It’s not just about renovating the asphalt, but adapting the road to current needs, protecting the most vulnerable groups, such as cyclists and motorcyclists.”
The action also provides for the replacement of key technical elements, such as the aphore stations and the expansion joints of the bridges of the stretch.
A firm with more than two decades and multiple repairs
The firm of the N-540 was executed in 1996 and, throughout these years, suffered various repairs, many of them the base of bituminous grouts. The current intervention implies an in-depth structural rehabilitation. This work is included in the conservation and maintenance program of the State Road Network, in which the Ministry has invested more than 120 million euros in the province of Lugo since June 2018.
