The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, put in value the bet of the Government of Pedro Sánchez for the reinforcement of the care network in Galicia, with a state investment of 18,520,000 euros. These are European funds of the Recovery Plan transferred to the Xunta under an agreement signed in 2021 with the Ministry of Social Rights, which will allow the construction and improvement of 20 senior centers in municipalities of less than 20,000 inhabitants throughout the Community, including three in the province of Pontevedra: Dozón (1.5 million) for the construction of a residential home, Growing (500,000€) for the extension of the residence of elderly and Fornelos de Montes (1.08 million) for the construction of a residential home and a day center.
Thanks to the political decision of the Government of Pedro Sánchez, 500 new public places of residence and 150 daytime care will be created in Galicia, which “represents a real advance in the public network of care for the elderly, a historical defect of the Xunta that was not able to solve in the exercise of its exclusive competences in social policy”.
The deputy delegate went to the town hall of Fornelos de Montes, where he visited, together with the mayor, Emiliano Lage, and several councilors, the old houses of teachers who will host the new residence. It will have 12 places of care for elderly people, of which 25% will be destined for large dependents.
During the visit, Losada regretted that the Xunta continues to hide the origin of these funds, without recognizing that they are direct transfers from the Government of Spain. “Once again the Xunta de Galicia resorts to the camouflage strategy and, instead of acknowledging the political decision of the Government to transfer these resources to Galicia to correct the chronic insufficiency of resources in the public network of care for the elderly, is dedicated to deceiving by ensuring that it pays 100% of the works or, at best, dilutes them under the ambiguous label of “European funds” as if they were money that falls from the sky,” he said.
Losada recalled that the agreement with the Ministry of Social Rights obliged the Xunta to guarantee the participation of local entities through well-equipped collaboration instruments, something that was concretized in the framework agreement signed with the FEGAMP on March 1, 2022. However, the Xunta is managing the funds late and, in addition, makes a propagandistic use of them, appropriating their authorship even in the official press releases. In addition, the subdelegate assured that the duty to distribute the funds between municipalities avoided the usual tendency of the Xunta to favor only municipalities governed by the PP, allowing municipalities such as Fornelos to access these resources.
