The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, congratulated the municipal library of San Sadurniño for the work in favor of reading carried out through its animation program called “the power of imagination”. He did it after visiting this space accompanied by the mayor, Seconino García, and together with the librarian, Anabel Gavín Merlán.
This library in San Sadurniño comes from winning the María Moliner Prize for Reading Animation awarded by the Ministry of Culture. This national competition, organized annually by the Ministry in collaboration with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, seeks to recognize the work of 370 libraries belonging to municipalities of less than 50,000 inhabitants that carry out salient projects that include actions of animation to reading, efficiency and library work. Social integration and use of new technologies. Each of the awards is endowed with 2,777.77 euros that had to be dedicated to the purchase of new books or publications for the library.
The subdelegate pointed out the importance of betting on this type of initiatives, since reading animation programs open doors to the imagination, make it possible to acquire information through diverse sources, which strengthens the capacities to form a critical opinion, as well as being a fundamental element for the promotion of culture and personal development of all.
In the same way, he valued the work done by municipal libraries, especially in small municipalities such as this one in San Sadurniño, since they are a space for socialization of the neighborhood, in many cases a space for inter-xenerational coexistence, and also, a leisure space where the promotion of culture and knowledge are the basis of daily work.
The deputy delegate of the Government congratulated the team responsible for the municipal library for the work carried out and stressed that the Government allocates this program just over a million euros.
“This program is of great strategic importance, since approximately half of the Spanish population resides in municipalities of less than 50,000 inhabitants, so the initiative has a wide scope in the whole territory” said María Rivas who also recalled that in the province of A Coruña there are 85 municipalities that purchase the requirements of the call for applications in terms of the population and to have a municipal library.
The subdelegate recalled that this library has already obtained two collections from the Ministry of Culture in the past for the work carried out. The first prize was thanks to the project “Un paso más” in the reading dynamization campaign of 2003, and the second in the María Moliner awards in 2012 with the project: "Reading in San Sadurniño", which undoubtedly highlights the involvement and good work of this municipal center.
María Rivas highlighted that, in addition to the library of San Sadurniño, six other libraries in the province of Ares, Mañón, Miño, Oleiros, Ortigueira and Pontedeume, were awarded in the last edition of the María Moliner awards.
