The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, and the general director of Civil Protection and Emergencies, Virgnia Barcones, encouraged Civil Protection volunteers to continue working “for a freer and safer society” during the appointment of Arturo Fuente as new president of the National Association of Voluntary Civil Protection Groups and Associations of Spain, which took place in Muxía. They were accompanied by the subdelegate of the Government in the province, María Rivas.
The delegate thanked and highlighted the role played by Civil Protection in many places, “being the first one you are in the chain of security in the face of any emergency, which connects them directly with the citizens providing at all times an exemplary service, although sometimes unknown.” Pedro Blanco recalled cases in which Civil Protection was key, “such as those of the Casón or the Prestige, a crisis where this body represented a key role and which took place very close to where we are today, Muxía.”
The General Director of Civil Protection and Emergencies stressed the importance of proper and extensive training in the territory for all Civil Protection volunteers, so that they can carry out their work in the best possible way and without falling into any risk for them. Furthermore, Virgnia Barcones highlighted the role that all citizens play in the prevention of emergencies, “being key for our future to bet on spreading in all social spheres a culture and an education that intrinsically carry these values.”
“Any emergency is easier to control if there was a correct prevention of it before,” said the delegate following the line of Virgnia Barcones. Pedro Blanco highlighted the risks that may exist in the future “due to phenomena such as climate change” make it even more necessary for the whole society to remain alert and prepared for any emergency.
Pedro Blanco recalled the honor that it was for Galicia to be the autonomous community chosen by the Ministry of the Interior, through Civil Protection, to test the 112 ERES-Alert alert system. “Mechanisms such as this one make it clear that this Government does not stop surpassing itself in the search for the total well-being and security of Galician citizens,” recalled the delegate.
Arturo Fuente appointment
The government delegate congratulated Arturo Fuente as the new president of the National Association of Voluntary Civil Protection Groups and Associations of Spain, a position for which he wished him and his directive “the best of luck”. He also took the opportunity to convey to them the recognition of Galician society for the important performance they perform and are going to perform with their work.
In this regard, he also appealed for collaboration between institutions to provide citizens with an “agile and transparent security service”. He conveyed the government’s commitment to these values, reminding them that they will have him by their side at all times when they need him, “as precisely in this one, with the presence of Virginia Barcones, as the best example of what I say”.
