Vilagarcía de Arousa, June 25, 2024.- The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, visited this morning the Port of General Interest of the State of Vilagarcía, where he was received by its president, José Manuel Cores Tourís. Both held the first official meeting after the appointment of Abel Losada as subdelegate and made a tour of the port facilities.
During the visit, the main projects for this year that will be financed from the funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain were supervised. Among them, it is planned to tender the work of the “Railway to Ferrazo, phase III”, which will allow the railway connection with the Ferrazo pier by the link road of the port, an alternative route to the current one, which will avoid the occupation of the Comboa pier in the passage operations of the Ferrazo face train. The estimated budget of the action reaches 1.4 million euros.
It is also planned to start the study for the implementation of the electricity supply to ships (Onshore Power Supply, OPS), which will be the first step to comply with the European regulations for the progressive decarbonization of maritime transport.
Finally, it is planned to contract the drafting of the new Strategic Plan, in order to adapt the content of this fundamental tool in port planning to the forecasts of the current Strategic Framework of the port system.
Abel Losada and Cores Tourís valued the cordiality of a “very profitable” meeting in which they highlighted the strategic importance of Porto de Vilagarcía for the whole province and Galicia, as shown by the figures of freight traffic in 2023, period in which it moved more than 1.5 million tons, establishing a new annual record. In this 2024, the data of movement of goods for the first five months of the year are also very positive and, with 613,654 tons, they are ranked as the third best January-May period in the history of the port.
