The Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service has published the final resolution of the call for the UNICO R+D 6G 2023 program. The programme will allocate 5.1 million euros of European Next Generation EU funds from the Recovery Plan to 5 projects in the province with the aim of strengthening the research ecosystem around the next generation of mobile technology.
The University of Vigo, which will receive 4,585,626 euros to develop three projects, is the main beneficiary entity of the province, together with the Viguesa company Optare Solutions, which will have an aid of 272,696 euros and the Quobis Networks, which will have a contribution of 262,177 euros. The three entities, which repeat how they benefited from the programme for another year, accounted for more than 8% of the funds distributed in each of the aid lines – firstly, for the improvement of university infrastructure and research teams, and secondly, for entrepreneurial initiatives for 5G+ experimental development.
Abel Losada stressed that these “contributions consolidate the area of Vigo as a scientific and technical reference, with a University and companies #capable of competing, attracting and retaining investments and aid, placing the province at the top of the map of development of 6G technology”.
The deputy delegate recalled that these investments add to the more than 7.4 million euros distributed in the previous call. In total, the government invested more than 12.5 million euros to develop twelve projects in the province “and place Vigo at the forefront of this disruptive technology,” he said.
5G and 6G Technology Driving Strategy
The 5G and 6G strategy developed by the Government aims to lead the deployment of these technologies in Europe as a priority axis of the Digital Spain Agenda by investing around 1.5 billion euros in global. The intention is that the country can use this technology as an economic and social transforming element.
With this objective, programs were launched that charge all the phases of development of these new mobile communication technologies in Spain with more than 300 million grants. All this, accompanied by the investment of more than 1,000 million euros to expand the deployment of infrastructures to provide 5G coverage to municipalities of less than 10,000 inhabitants throughout the provinces of Spain.
The Government extends its commitment to the technological innovation of 6G with a new aid of 5M€ for three entities of the province
