Ourense, March 6, 2024.- The Subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Emilio González, today inaugurated the conference on the “Legal framework applicable to foreign women victims of gender violence”, which took place at the headquarters of the Government subdelegation, and in which more than 50 professionals, representatives of institutions and of the State Security Forces and Corps participated.
During his speech, Emilio González stressed that “if we look at the numbers of foreign women victims of gender violence, one in four women who today needs some kind of protection through the VioGén system, are foreign women.”
There are currently 425 active cases that represent "425 very powerful reasons for us to work every day to support them, help them, protect them and provide them with everything that a Rule of Law, which a modern society like ours, owes to any of its fellow citizens: security, health, work, housing, dignity, recognition..."
The subdelegate also wanted to highlight the residence and work permits granted to foreign women victims of gender violence, indicating that their growth has continued since 2006. In total, 915 were granted in Galicia.
However, he wanted to underline that "when we talk about helping women victims of male violence you can never be complacent with the work done, because there is always much more to do".
Emilio González wanted to invite them to work together to protect these women, remembering that it is "crucial to recognize and make visible their special vulnerability and work together from all areas of administration, to protect them regardless of their origin or migratory situation, but without ceasing to recognize that this status entails greater difficulties."
Finally, the deputy delegate thanked the councilors and social service managers of the different municipalities for their assistance; the staff of the women’s information centers; members of the State Security Forces and Corps; and the directors of the different areas of the Government Delegation and Subdelegation.
The activity was coordinated by the head of the Gender Violence Unit of the Government delegation, María Alida Iglesias. The main report was given by the Head of Foreign Affairs of the Government Subdelegation in Ourense, Josefina Rodríguez Durán.
