The General Director of Roads of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Juan Pedro Fernández Palomino, visited today the neighborhood of Matogrande, in A Coruña, to communicate in the presence of the subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, and the mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey, the advances in the actions of Remodeling and environmental integration of the Avenida de Alfonso Molina (AC-11), the main access road to the city.
The most recent milestone was the approval on March 21 of the AC-11 Refurbishment Construction Project. The director general has announced that work is already underway on the preparation of the tender for the works, a milestone that will take place this year as announced by Minister Raquel Sánchez on a visit to A Coruña last October. The project has a tender budget of 21 million euros, and another 3 million euros of investment in expropriations and technical assistance will be mobilized.
Avda remodeling. Alfonso Molina
The approved project is of great importance for the city of A Coruña and its metropolitan area. Its main objective is to improve the functionality, capacity and road safety of Alfonso Molina Avenue.
For this, the important braiding movements that exist, which are generated especially at peak hours between the knots of the AP-9, the Matogrande-Pocomaco knot and the Ponte da Pedra-San Cristobal knot, will be minimized. These braids cause road safety problems that lead to traffic jams, congestion, noise and pollution, with a global impact on access to the city and finally on the mobility of the entire metropolitan area.
To achieve this objective, new lateral service roads have been planned in both directions of circulation that allow to reorder the existing accesses, being necessary to replace the 2 affected pedestrian walkways that cross the avenue.
Finally, the movement of the link of Ponte da Pedra to the AC-10 (port) and neighborhood of Matogrande from the center of the city will be completed.
Environmental integration of Pedralonga Avenue and Walkway
In parallel with the upcoming tender for the capacity improvement works, the drafting of the project for environmental integration of the Avenida de Alfonso Molina is progressing, whose budget is estimated at 4.5 million euros for the works and another 1.5 million euros for investment in expropriations and technical assistance. It is planned to be financed through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
This action incorporates several aspects that improve the urban integration of the action and provide road safety to vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists and alternative mobility): new and continuous paths, cycle paths, plantations and plant screens, the incorporation of a new pedestrian walkway projected on the Matogrande-Pocomaco vial that will facilitate access to the university, the relocation of bus stops increasing the safety and fluidity of traffic or the execution of new vials that make possible the realization of new movements and accesses.
For its part, the construction works of the pedestrian walkway between the neighborhoods of Pedralonga and Palavea, on the AC-11 itself, are still in progress, amounting to 1.2 million euros and are being financed through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
All of the aforementioned actions aim to increase road safety and particularly that of vulnerable users, reduce the carbon footprint and pollution through new plantations, reduce noise pollution and increase the green surface in the urban environment of A Coruña.
