The government delegate in Galicia, José Miñones, today highlighted the investment and execution impulse of the Government of Pedro Sánchez for completing the A-54 motorway, which will connect Lugo and Santiago becoming the backbone of the interior of Galicia. José Miñones supervised today in Arzúa (A Coruña) the execution of the Melide-Arzúa section of this high-capacity track which, together with that of Melide-Palas de Rei, are the two that remain to be put into service on this high-capacity track. In this visit participated the sub-delegates of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, and of Lugo, Isabel González, and the mayors of Melide, José Manuel Pérez, and of Santiso, Manuel Adan, in addition to the lieutenant of alcade of Arzúa, Begoña Balado.
The delegate reviewed the “clear and firm commitment of this Government to recover the time lost in the Galician infrastructures, with decisions and historical investments”. A commitment that, this year, translates into investments of almost 1,000 million euros from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) for communications in Galicia. The departure for roads “turns Galicia into the fourth Autonomous Community of Spain by volume of investments: 225 million euros, 10% more than last year’s appropriation,” he said.
Regarding the Lugo-Santiago motorway, José Miñones recalled that in the last two years the sections that remained to start of this A-54 motorway were unblocked, so that today “we are in its final stretch”. Currently, MITMA works intensively on the two running sections of the A-54 with 250 people and a total of 50 machines.
José Miñones recalled that the new motorway will allow to link Lugo with Santiago de Compostela in 50 minutes of travel. In parallel, it will bring a significant improvement in road safety, both road and pedestrian, of the N-547, where there is currently a significant transit of pilgrims, and of the villas where this national road circulates.
Arzúa–Melide section
The Arzúa–Melide section, which is 16.4 kilometres long and has a total investment of 116.5 million euros, begins in the south of the town of Melide, at the intersection of the N-547 with the autonomous road AC–840, and ends in Arzúa, connecting with the section already in service of the A-54 between Arzúa and Santiago de Compostela. After going through the municipalities of Santiso and Melide, it ends south of the town of Melide, where it connects with the contiguous section, which is also under construction.
The route includes four connections: Melide Sur link with the autonomous highway AC-840, Santiso link with the highway CP-4603, Arzúa Sur link with the autonomous highway AC-905 and Arzúa Oeste link with the N-547 and with the autonomous highway AC-840. There are also 25 structures projected, in which 9 viaducts stand out: Catasol, Cabazás, Fontesagrada, Valverde, Boente, Iso, Brandeso, Ladrón and viaduct of the Arzúa Oeste link.
In addition, 10 upper steps and 6 lower steps will be executed, of which 2 of the upper steps and 4 of the lower steps are specific for fauna or multifunctional steps, in addition to serving the transversal permeability of the highway.
With the completion of the works of this section Melide-Arzúa and those of the contiguous section Palas de Rei -Melide (85.63 million euros of investment and 11.7 km in length), the entire route of the A-54 motorway will be completed. A total of 93.4 kilometers that accounted for more than 700 million euros of investment since its inception.
