Barcelona, July 16, 2024.- The Ministry of the Interior and the Department of the Interior have reached an agreement to close the security plan and distribution of functions for the event of the Copa America de vela 2024 (America’s Cup 37) to be held between August 22 and October 27 in Barcelona.
This is an event of global relevance, but it is also a challenge for police and emergency forces due to its complexity since it is a sporting event that extends for two and a half months, affects the land, sea and air spaces, in a city like Barcelona, in summer and giving spaces like the sea a different use to the usual.
For this reason, under this agreement, the design and direction of the security plan has been entrusted to the body of Mossos d’Esquadra and provides for the constitution of a Coordination Center (CECOR) in which all the police and emergency bodies operating in Catalonia will be included, which will work in a coordinated way within their competences.
This Tuesday, a meeting was held in the Government Delegation in Catalonia presided over by the Government delegate, Carlos Prieto, the Director General of the Police of the Generalitat, Pere Ferrer, and the Director General of Coordination and Studies of the Ministry of the Interior, José Antonio Rodríguez, accompanied by the police officers of the different security forces operating in Catalonia, in which the green light was given to the Security Master Plan that will be executed during the sporting event.
The basis of the agreement establishes the functions that correspond to each police force. Mossos d’Esquadra will be responsible for the security of citizens and public order, administrative police, judicial and investigation police in both land and port areas, cybersecurity, protection of authorities in Catalonia, air and traffic police.
The Civil Guard will have the powers and functions of custody of the port
and will take care of the security of the spaces where the
regattas and the training sessions of the Copa America as well as other activities in the territorial sea, without prejudice to those that correspond to them competentially.
On the part of the National Police, the agreement specifies that its functions
the framework of the America's Cup, will be the protection of state authorities
and authorities of other countries, support, if required, in functions of
Citizen security and maintenance of public order and performance of the
functions relating to the control of entry and exit of citizens and of
alienism.
The Urban Guard in the AC37 will be in charge of traffic regulation,
accompanying the movements of the authorities in the city,
Administrative police and control and surveillance of public spaces of the
around the America's Cup.
Finally, the port police will perform the functions that are its own.
