Madrid, May 9, 2024
The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, met today with the Secretary General of the Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) of Castilla y León, Vicente Andrés, to discuss the future of the railway service between Medina del Campo, Valladolid and Palencia.
During the meeting, the minister said that, within the framework of the objective of promoting the use of the train in the region, the Ministry launched in April 2023 a proximity railway service between the three cities of Castilla and León that involves better frequencies, schedules and tariffs.
Thus, between Medina del Campo and Valladolid, the services of Media Distancia have been improved with new trains until reaching 18 services per direction between Valladolid and Medina del Campo and 15 services per direction between Valladolid and Palencia. Therefore, the total offer is of 64 circulations. In addition, regular travelers can benefit from free subscriptions during 2024.
In its first year, the proximity corridor has recorded a 52% increase in passenger traffic, demonstrating the good reception of this initiative.
This is a 3-year pilot experience, which can be extended by agreement of the Council of Ministers if sufficient utilisation levels are met. This ensures a sufficient length of time to analyze whether the use of intermodal proximity services is consolidated among citizens and improvements must be addressed or maintained.
