Almost half of the students of the ESO of Castilla y León study a second foreign language and 13% in Primary

April 22, 2024. 100% of the students of the second cycle of Early Childhood Education of Castilla y León study a foreign language, which is 14 points more than the national average, according to the 'Statistics of Teaching Foreign Languages' published by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports.
In this way, Castilla y León is positioned together with Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Murcia and Galicia as a leader in foreign language teaching among students from 3 to 6 years old, with English established in the curriculum of its 47,063 centers.
As for Baccalaureate, the percentage of students in language teaching also increases, so that 99.1% (30,269) have studied a foreign language in the 2022-2023 academic year, mostly English, which means a growth of almost three points compared to the previous academic year (96.5%).
In addition, 12.9% of primary school students study a second foreign language, 42.3% of ESO students and 11.7% of high school students. The majority opted for that language to be French.
With regard to the use of a foreign language as a teaching language, in the academic year 2022-2023, 62.3% of primary school students participated in this type of educational experience; 34% in secondary school; and 1.7% in high school. Regarding the type of language used as a teaching language, the majority is English.
In addition, 428 students from Castilla y León studied at schools that teach foreign education systems, where foreign languages are used as the language of instruction.
Finally, in Vocational Training, a total of 4,042 students study a language in Basic VET; 2,027 in Middle Grade; and 2,428 in Higher Grade. Most of the language chosen was English.
