The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded 9.7 million euros (VAT included), through Adif, the second phase of the road rehabilitation in the stretch between Mataporquera and Torrelavega, of the conventional railway line Palencia-Santander and part of the C-1 line of the Vicinity of Cantabria.
This investment, which includes both the works and the tasks of technical assistance to them, includes the renovation of rails and sleepers of several sections of the route, as well as the replacement of detours at the stations of Lantueno, Pesca, Cobejo, Bárcena and Las Fraguas. In addition, materials valued at more than another 7 million euros will be used in the realization of the works.
The action between Mataporquera and Torrelavega that is now awarded completes the renovation that was carried out in a first phase on this same 79 km route of the conventional network, which includes eight stations and ten roadblocks, with an investment of 8 million euros.
With this intervention, included in the Proximity Plan of Cantabria, infrastructure, electrification and signaling will be optimized, improving its performance and reliability and, therefore, the railway service in the stretch, benefiting both the proximity circulations and the connection between Cantabria and the Central Plateau.
Level and electrification steps will also be improved
Within the framework of this contract, the firm of nine steps at level will be replaced by rubber modules, which favor the crossing of the track. Various stretches of track will also be conditioned and the superstructure of the metal bridge will be rehabilitated. In addition, complementary actions will be carried out in different elements of the electrification system to adapt it to the new track configuration and the security and communications facilities will be renewed.
The Ministry, through ADIF, has already carried out and is carrying out various actions aimed at improving the railway infrastructure of Cantabria (integral road renovations, improvements in signalling and electrification, suppression of level crossings, etc. ), with the aim of improving both the performance of the Neighbourhoods network and the connections with Palencia and Madrid.
These actions contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 9 (reliable, sustainable and quality infrastructure) and 11 (sustainable cities and communities).
